Ready for Bunkbeds?

I have twin 3.5 year old boys. Their beds are twin beds that turn into bunkbeds. I was wondering what was a good/safe age for bunkbeds. I'm not planning on doing it any time soon, but I was thinking that 5 years old might be OK. Any thoughts?

What can I do next?

I too am now a stay-at-home Mom of four. However, when I worked for the state Child Development Center, the nurse practitioner recommended age 6 being the age to allow kids to go into bunk beds. I guess it just depends....I have a 6 y/o and 4 y/o son and they have bunks but we have had some issues with jumping and swinging off the beds. If I had a choice I would wait:-) Girls probably would not be an issue as they are usually not big daredevils:-) Good luck!!!

hey C., i have two little girls, ages 3 1/2 and almost 2... my kids are *insane* little daredevils, but i trust the older one enough to do the bunk-bed thing. by the time shes 4 i will have gotten the girls bunkbeds... im putting a siderail on the top bunk *just in case*... really what im saying is, if you trust your boys (and your gut will tell you) then when its time you'll know. best of luck!! ~R.

Our bunkbeds suggest kids be 6 before using the top bunk. My 10 and almost 6 year old share the beds. I have let my younger son sleep on the top bunk, and he has done fine, although I am much more comfortable with him doing that now (closer to 6), than before. My sister also has bunkbeds, and has let her son try out the top bunk when he was five.

Your sons will probably be okay at five, but since children mature differently, just go with your instincts regarding when you feel comfortable about letting one of them sleep in the top bunk. Just be sure your top bunk has a rail on any exposed side.

I have a feeling the bigger issue will be who gets the top and who gets the bottom bunk.

My son is only 2 1/2 but I recently put him in what they call a loft bed, because hus room is so small. It's like a bunk bed just without a lower bunk. I worried the first night or two but he seems fine. Also, he's always been a really great climber, otherwise I wouldn't have ever considered it. I think it depends mor on the physical capabilities of the kids than it does the age.
