Choosing a Bed for a 3 Year Old

Hello ladies, I had a question.

My DD is almost 3 year old. We are planning to get a full size bed for her as she likes me or DH to lie down with her when putting her to sleep. My dilemma is this. I have #2 on the way. Eventually I would like them to share a room which means we might need a bunk bed in the room. I wanted to know if any full size bed can be converted into a bunk bed? The reason I am asking is because I am planning to buy a full bed along with matching furniture items like dresser etc so that I don’t have to worry about finding matching items later. If in future I have to buy a new bunk bed, then the full size bed that I buy now will be a waste and other items may not match. So, I am not sure what to do? Also is white furniture only for girls or for a boy as well?

What can I do next?

So What Happened?

Thank you all for the wonderful replies. I guess we will get the bunker bed itself and then wait to install the upper one till the younger one is ready for it. Basically my DD sleeps in the crib converted to toddler bed and I don't want to buy another crib for the little one, so she gets upgraded to the new bed and little one can sleep in the crib.

Bunk beds are extremely dangerous. My friend from Jr. high all the way through high school lost her son when he fell off the top bunk. He was not goofing off or roughhousing, nothing like that, he just fell off and was dead. Please find another way. The beds can go differently and who knows, you might find a 3 bedroom house you like and move in a year or two when they are big enough to need their own beds.

"converting" a bed that was not made to be a bunk bed is not safe. However there are bunkbeds that do have a full bed on the bottom. There are even bunkbeds that have a full on the bottom and on the top. Find a set that can be split into 2 beds. (I know Costco has them, they might only be online) We got our girls bunkbeds. They are 6 and 3 and we have had them for 1 1/2 years. We taught our oldest how to go up and down. When my then 2 year old took a nap we removed the ladder from the room so she would not try to climb up it. Recenly the 3 year old has learned how to go up and down the ladder on her own and now the girls earn slumber parties where they share the top. Its a twin so it would have been nice to have a full on top for this but they have a small room. but it is So cute. Good luck!

they make the bunk beds with the futon on the bottom....i believe that you can put a full sized mattress on the bottom instead of the futon mattress....

They do sell those bunk beds that are full below and twin on top. Maybe you could just get the mattress/box springs for now.
And why wouldn't white work for a boy? It's completely neutral, and I think it's "brighter" and more fun than brown. My son used to have the cutest white dresser with little sports knobs (baseballs, basketballs, etc.) on it.
My son and daughter shared a room throughout their preschool/early elementary years and loved it! The paint was neutral but they had their own bedding and specific areas to "decorate." It was really sweet :)

If you plan on sharing with bunks I would just get a twin bed now and you can always get another one or use the mattess for the bunk bed you may get later. Most bunks you can make twin later. I wouldn't get a double bed if it was me. I don't think white goes too well for boys but you can make brown or other wood go for girls okay. Just my thoughts on it.

We saw a cute bunk bed at Ikea. The bottom bed is a full size and the top bunk is a twin. Some even came with a trundle under the full size bed that was easy to move around. If you have an Ikea store nearby (or even look online) go and take a look around. We got our 3 yrs old a full size bed with a pull out trundle for visitors. Ikea had a lot of cool ideas for limited space.

I don't know about conversion but you can buy a bunk bed that is a full on the bottom and a twin for the top bunk.
Maybe use the top for storage and don't install the ladder for a while...
I don't think bunk beds are recommended for use under age 6.

As so many said below, there are bunk beds with a full size bed on bottom and a twin on top that may serve your needs. Also, my son has a bunk bed which can also be two twin size beds (a little rebuilding is necessary). My thought is, if we wanted to we could probably put the two twins together and buy a full size mattress to go on top of twin size boxsprings. Then, later you could ditch the mattress and boxsprings and convert the bed to twin bunkbeds. I would go to Kids Rooms or a similar store and research all of your options. You would be surprised at the selection those specialty stores have!!!

Room and board has a bunk bed set that can be used as one bed and later converted but don't do what we did and just buy one bed and later the bunk bed. It costs more to do it that way. Buy the bunk bed set and only set up the lower bed. they have matching dressers, etc.

I have a 4 year old and a 1 year old and they have to share a room. We are going to buy a bunk bed next year with a full size bed on the bottom and a twin on top. My 4 year old has a toddler bed still and my 1 year old is in a crib so by waiting one more year I think will be better for my 1 year old. I figured that either my husband or I would need to sleep on the bottom with the little one to train him to sleep in bed. Personally I think white is a girly color but I'm sure you can make it boyish with the bedding somehow. This is the one I'm thinking about getting, http://www.jeromes.com/en/browse/kidz-to-teens,all,ACM33

There are bunks that are a full size on the bottom and twin on top. Not sure where but I have seen pics. However, your new one will not be ready for an upper bunk for years and years. You could just get a standard metal frame and not worry about the actual bed/headboard now. Also, depending upon the style, the pieces don't need to 'match', just to coordinate. I don't have a matching bedroom suite, I have a brushed steel bed, elm wood dressers and glass and metal night stand. White is classic for boys or girls. My son (5-1/2) has a white bed (with black under drawers), white bookshelf wall and white lacquer dresser. Simple clean cut lines work for either gender.
