Random nausea...tired of Feeling like This!

So over the last few months, I would occasionally become nauseous in the late afternoon through the evening, enough that all I wanted to do was lay on the couch and eat nothing but saltines. It would usually resolve by the time I went to bed. I never vomited and I couldn't figure out the cause of the nausea.
The last several days, I've had almost constant nausea. Haven't vomited, but it's bad enough that I feel really crappy and don't want to do anything. I happened to have my yearly exam at the OBGYN yesterday, told her about it, she thought it was very unlikely to be my BC pills or other meds as I've been on them for a long time with no issues. She asked about my eating habits and suggested it could be spikes and drops in blood sugar, since I'm guilty of the All Carbs All The Time diet and occasionally being too distracted to eat. I am pretty petite so those blood sugar swings could definitely be having an effect, also, it is often accompanied by a sort of non-specific mild headache/feeling of lightheadedness, which is another effect of blood sugar being out of whack. today I followed her advice of eating a protein and a carb together regularly throughout the day and I feel just as icky as before. I also skipped my usual morning cup of coffee as it generally causes me to delay breakfast by at least an hour. I had some caffeinated tea instead and ate right away. Anyone else ever had this happen?? Oh, and I'm not pregnant - just had a normal period and the doc confirmed based on her exam. I will go see my regular doc soon if this doesn't resolve. I have too much to do to feel crappy!! As my mom used to say, I don't have time to be sick!

What can I do next?

The nausea combined with the lightheadedness almost mimicks symptoms of vertigo. I had it terribly when I stopped Lexapro. Lasted for months.
You should probably make an appt to go have bloodwork done to rule out hypo/hyper-glyemia and/or thyroid issues.

Good luck! Hope you feel better!

I second the vertigo...it's possible that this could be causing your problems.

On a different note, how are you feeling with respect to allergies/sinuses/ears? An inner-ear imbalance could cause some nausea.

I would probably go see the regular doc soon. You've been dealing with this for long enough.

It could be an allgery to something you are eating. You say you eat a lot of carbs, you could have Celiac's. I recommend you carefully read the ingredient list on everything you eat from now on. It could also be a sensitivity to MSG.

How long have you been on the BC pills? I had been on the pill for years before going off to have my daughter, then I went back on it after having her. About 3 years later I started having a lot of weird issues, anger issues, and feeling nauseous and getting headaches a lot. I finally just went off the pill and my symptoms went away.

I'm not saying that this is your problem, I'm not a doctor. But that was my experience with the pill.

You may need to supplement to regulate your blood sugar levels. There have been extensive clinical studies on several food supplements (not just vitamins) that give you easily absorbable nutrition without the blood sugar spikes. There is a well-regarded study on metabolic syndrome and diabetes control. You might also find that properly nourishing your body at the cellular level (vs. just what you consume that isn't absorbed) will reduce the cravings.

You are craving carbs because your body is starving for something - but you're feeding it the wrong thing. Keep some whole almonds around for a snack - I keep some in my purse for when I'm out and about and likely to just grab something that's not good for me. It's a good protein source and it's crunchy, which helps. A friend found that was the only thing that kept her nausea at bay while she was pregnant.

I think you are waiting too long to eat. You say you are too distracted to remember, and that's not a good thing. Please put 5 meals into your daily routine - 5 small, balanced meals or snacks. A handful (about 15) almonds is a snack - and it's a lot of protein. Keep some brown rice or especially quinoa cooked up in the fridge that you can just grab a small bowlful - it feels like carbs but it's got protein too.

I have the same types of symptoms when I eat something with MSG. I went through a couple of weeks of this, when I realized that the new crackers I had bought and were eating for snack contained MSG. Once I realized this, I stopped eating them and it went away.
My MSG allergy came out of nowhere, too . After my second pregnancy, MSG is a no-go for me. Have you starting eating something new lately?
