Quick Weekend in Indianapolis. Where to Stay?

We are going to take a weekend trip to Indy this weekend and I'm looking into hotels. We are leaving Saturday afternoon from Chicago and we will stay Saturday and Sunday night and return home late Monday. We plan on going to the Children's Museum and possible the zoo or just explore the downtown area.
So my question is...where should we stay. The hotel rates for downtown are a little pricy, but is it worth it to be that close. I've seen some hotels in the Carmel and/or Keystone area. How far away is this from downtown?
Any other suggestions on where to stay. Or if you have any other 'must see' activities for us. Thanks for your suggestions!

Check out www.vrbo.com and www.homeaway.com
I use thes all the time! i love them! i almost never stay in a hotel!
They stay preatty on par with local hotel prices, but you get so much more.
with homeway, you can even look at the rentals in your price range in "map view" so you can see right where they are and what they are close to.

Carmel is maybe 20 minutes or so from Indy. My sister lives there...very nice suburb.

I grew up in the Indy area, and it is a nice, clean, family friendly town. It is easy to get around, so it isn't a big deal to stay in the Carmel/Keystone area. As mentioned, it is about a 20 minute drive. Not sure how old your kids are, but there is water park hotel (Holidome--water park is called carribbean cove) that looks fun. It is located at 465 and Michigan Road, which is about 20 minutes from downtown.

You got some good advice on things to do for a short stay. The Children's museum is fantastic! Have a great trip!

use hotwire or priceline (if they do bidding) to get a hotel. Use google maps to see actual distances, but both the zoo and the children's museum have great parking.
At the zoo feed the larakeets! You will LOVE it, video tape it. And feed the giraffe too, that was so cool.
At the children's museum, head to the top floor right away and sign up for the rock climbing if your kids are old enough. It fills up FAST and is first come. My girls still talk about that.

As was stated earlier, Carmel is a suburb about 20 mins north of Indy. Keystone is in the city of Indy on the North side-very close to downtown. Lots of shopping and dining there. I would definately go to the Children's Zoo-it's awesome! If you or anyone in your family likes car racing, I would go to the museum at the IMS track in Speedway on the west side. Have fun!
