Questions on Teething Symptoms

I believe my 7 mo. old daughter is teething. She hasn't had any teeth come in yet, but she's been doing a lot of drooling and chewing since she was 4 mo. old. In the last week, she has had a few more symptoms: Loss of appetite, and diarrhea. She's also been working really hard on her top gums (why it's not the bottom ones - I'm not sure). Anyway, my concern is with the diarrhea. I've also noticed that she hasn't had as many wet diapers, and she's still taking a fair amount of bottles, just not as much baby food. Has anyone had any experience with this, and would it be safe to give her some Pedialite or something else? I'm concerned that if I let it go, it might make the situation worse. She has had the basic baby foods (yellow/green veggies and peaches, pears, applesauce, bananas), so I'm hoping she won't have any allergic reactions, if I wanted to try some fruit juices, to see if that would help. Any suggestions on what I could do to help her get through this?

What can I do next?

hello K.,
my 1 year old went through the same symptoms when he was that age and the doctor told me to give he pedialyte just so he didn't dehydrate. And the was it sounds his she's going to get them teeth on top with in the next 2 weeks. My son got the top teeth first to and them bottom teeth weren't far behind.

Your best bet is to give her pedialite inbetween her formula. She is liking her bottles better right now because it feels better on her gums. If she does not like pedialite, I have always given my kids "crystal light" when they were sick, it does not have any sugar in it, and it will help from getting dehydrated.. Good luck, hopefully those teeth will come in very soon!! With the three kids that I have, I have noticed that the longer it takes for them to come in, the harder it is on them. My first had ALL of his teeth by the time he was 18 months and that was including his 2yr molers. My 2nd is now 2 1/2 and just finaly got her last 2yr moler, and man was she a moody little girl. My 3rd, now 8 months, just got her third and working on her 4th...

any fruits or juices may increase diarrhea, so maybe try to cut back on those foods until she's back to normal and focus on the vegetables instead. as for pedialite, i'd ask your doctor before going that route; my understanding is that the liquid in their milk is all they need. however, dehydration is a concern with diarrhea, so watch for the other symptoms of dehydration, discussed here: http://www.mayoclinic.com/health/dehydration/DS00561/DSEC...

When my baby was ill and losing weight, I checked into Pedialyte and noticed that the label says to consult a physician first, so I tried the generic pediatric "Ensure" drink instead and it helped. Teething symptoms like diarrhea are common and will come and go over many months. If you make sure she is getting as much liquid as she will take, and eating regularly overall (there will be times when she won't want to eat and that's OK) she should be fine. Infant stool can vary dramatically from day to day or week to week, depending on teething, diet, etc. At first it's disconcerting, but you'll get used to it. :)
My youngest scared me to death recently when his diaper was bright, slimy red! Turns out it was the Gatorade!

With diarhea, I think you're supposed to cut down on fruits and fruit juices. They just make it worse. But pedialite is a good idea, so she doesn't get dehydrated. I'm sure it is teething, and she'll be fine. But she could also have the flu that's been going around. My son had diarrhea for about 10 days.

Hi. I'm a mom of 5, and I have at least that much experience in it! Sounds like the teething blues to me, although could also be a virus. All of my kids got sick with teething. Some had multiple ear infections to go with it. Fever and Diarrhea were ALWAYS a factor and would seem to last off and on for months depending on how fast they're teeth came in. Molars are the worst and most painful, but only follow top four and bottom four front. Pedialyte is an excellent invention that is very useful to prevent dehydration and should only be used when there is diarrhea or vomiting present. In which case, they can have a liter or two a day. It comes in all flavors including water no flavor and can be mixed with formula. At 7 months it's still really important they get enough formula for there growing bodies and brain development, tho it can be an unhappy contributor to more diarrhea. Grin and bare it Ive always been told and most important is just to make sure they are having plenty of wet diapers a day. Tylenol is a wonderful thing for pain and also by trial and error I found at Walgreen's a all natural, homeopathic remedy in baby section of "teething tablets" and also "colic tablets" which are just about identical ingredients and I call them a "miracle"! They are completely safe and very effective. They even help with bedtime, and they are yummy! I tried some myself! Good luck and blessings to you in your mommy-hood adventure! ~C.

K.,
My son had a terrible time with teeth. He didn't get his first tooth until about 8 months and just like your daughter he had diarrhea....sometimes he would have 6 dirty diapers in a day. He also ate less so I was wondering where all the poop was coming from. Once his teeth came in, the diarrhea cleared up and his appetite increased, but then it started all over again every time he got a new one.
I would reccomend just giving her water in a sippy cup to keep her hydrated. The pedialyte tastes terrrible and fruit juice has sugar in it so that can make diarrhea worse. If she won't drink water then try diluting the juice a little.
Also, bananas and applesauce are supposed to help bind things up a little so maybe give her extra helpings of those.
Good luck!

Diarrhea is totally common in teething. My little guy's bottom would flare up and he'd pop a tooth shortly thereafter. If she's still wetting her diapers, she's probably just fine, but a little pedialyte wouldn't hurt. You could also give a little water. Stay away from the juice (makes diarrhea worse) and try some oatmeal and bananas. Yogurt is another really good option. Good luck and hang in there!

Hi K.,

Don't get discouraged, teething can be hard on mommy and daddy as well as baby. The main thing you want to do is keep the fluids going in. Don't stress too much on the loss of appetitie. If she is still taking the formula that is great. I would think that pedialite is the best choice if you want to give her more fluids since it has the proper nutrients that are being lost in the diarrhea. I am a mother of 3 going on number 4 in about 3 months and every baby is different. Also do ever forget to just call the dr's office and ask the pediatricians nurse if you are ever unsure about anything. I hope I was helpful, and keep your chin up it will get better. :-)

Bowels get moving from any of the P fruits. Peaches, Pears, Prunes, etc. Try to avoid those for a little bit to see if the runs slow down. Stick with banana's and applesauce as they cause a little more constipation than normal. Good luck.

My daughter 4 month old recently had a cold and I was told that if she is not having the normal amount of pee diapers to give her some Pedialite.

I would also contact the Pediatrian to find out if they want you to come in for a visit.

You would be fine with the pedialyte. Giving her juice would just make the diarrhea worse. I was told that wasn't a symptom of teething, but if happened to both of my kids when they got their teeth in. I'm not expert, just wanted to share my experience.

Don't worry, the diarrhea should pass soon. I think that it would be fine to give her pedialyte. I have never heard of a child having an allergy to it. I would also suggest not giving your daughter juice for awhile. Juice usually makes diarrhea worse. If you are worried that your daughter isn't having any urine output, put a small peice of toilet paper in her diaper to see if it gets wet. Sometimes diapers are so absorbant, that it is difficult to detect small amounts of urine. Good luck with your sweet little girl.

Teething symptoms always increase just as the teeth are ready to pop. Don't panic, don't give Pedialite and relax knowing that her body knows best how to handle the process. If she is not peeing much it is because her body is using all the liquids you are giving her. Offer her a bottle with water in it if you think she is thirsty - if she doesn't drink it, she's not thirsty. Water is better than Pedialite ~ she is getting plenty of electroltyes in her food.
