Question for Charting Experts

Hi there,
I'm trying to chart my menstrual cycles and I am stumped on how to count "Day 1." Usually the day before my period starts in full, I have a single but substantial spot of bright red. It only happens once, then nothing for about 24 hours until my period starts. Is Day 1 the day of my full period, or the day of the first bright red spot?
Thank you!

What can I do next?

So What Happened?

Thanks, everyone! I didn't know about the 4 p.m. rule... I'm not charting temps because my almost-two-year-old is still waking up once each night.

Read teh book Taking Charge of Your Fertility. But generally the first full day is day 1.

I have always heard day one is the day normal red blood flows And if it is after 4 pm Day 1 is the following day :)

I believe Day 1 is the first day of true flow. A single drop of blood followed by almost a day of nothing doesn't count. A similar thing happens to me - I get a drop of blood, but my period doesn't actually start until a few days later (unlike you, though, I have scant spotting in between). My fertility dr says to start counting on the first day of actual, prolonged bleeding. And like someone else mentioned, if it's after 4 or 5 pm, Day 1 would be the next day. I recommend "Taking Charge of Your Fertility" - it's a great book for learning how to chart, as well as other ways of keeping track of your cycle.

I believe that you would count the first sign of bleeding as day 1. Even though you only have the single spot of blood, that is a sign of the uterine wall starting to come apart from the uterus. That would be considered day 1.

Also, are you charting all signs of fertility or are you just keeping track of days?? I've been charting for 5yrs, I don't consider myself an expert because I've had babies and breastfed during this time as well, but if you have any questions feel free to ask.

Day 1 is when you actually have flow, not spotting. FertilityFriend is a really good online resource and there is a free version. Good luck!

I would think it would helpful to know what method you use. I use Naprotechnology and I believe you would count the first sign of bleeding since it is so close to the rest. If it were further out it would be considered spotting.
