No but you can get NetFlix on the Wii you only pay the Netflix monthly fee not like with X-Box where you have to have a gold membership. We love it!
I feel so silly because it seems like I should just KNOW the answer to this. Alas, I am the least technologically friendly person in the universe. I can't text. So what I need to know is: can the wii play movies? It seems like it should be able to but the directions aren't specifically in the instruction manual and we don't want to mess up the wii or the movie.
I will be forever grateful to whoever can loan me a clue.
Thanks

no it cannot, straight from the factory the Wii does not play dvds, there are some softwares you can add that can make it play dvds, but you need to check your warranty because they might void it.
I just looked it up on the web and it appears you cannot. The new wii that will be released next will have the ability to play dvds tho. As usual, when you buy electronics they always come out with something better right after you buy something.
You would have to hack your current wii to make it play movies and that probably takes some techy knowledge with a probability that your wii would get screwed up in the process.
Nope, just PS3 and Xbox360. Atleast it plays Netflix if you have Wifi hooked up to it.
No it isn't meant to show DVDs. Now if you have Netflix they will send you a disc that can be used in the Wii and you can watch movies through their website on your tv through your Wii. Now that will only work if you have internet (wifi) and your Wii is connected to the network.
No, it can't. I was so mad when my hubby told me that! What we have recently been enjoying though, is Netflix through the Wii, its great!
If you have internet access and your wii is connected to the internet you can stream movies from netflicks.com. Otherwise try the following: http://www.ehow.com/how_###-###-####_watch-movies-nintend...
No. And Yes. It Depends. How's that for an answer? :-)
Out of the box, no it can not play DVDs. If you have Netflix (we pay less than $10/month for it) you can get unlimited movies/tv shows through their Instant Play. All you need is a free disk to pop into your Wii and good fast internet access.
You can modify your Wii to play DVDs but it you should probably be a little comfortable with technology before doing so. You can find easy step-by-step directions online for hacking it. If you do so, you can play DVDs and any ROM games you come across online and download. This is not supported, though, so if you mess up your machine you are on your own. We have not done this (netflix is enough for us) but I know many friends who have done it and watch DVDs on their Wii all the time.
