Question About D & C

Hi Moms,
I am sad to say that for the second time in 6 months I have a baby with no heartbeat. Six months ago I miscarried at 12 weeks, the fetus stopped growing at 10 weeks and this time I went to my 12 week appointment and there was no heartbeat. They think it just happened over the last couple of days. Anyway, they said that this time I should get a D&C because it will be a lot more painful and there will be a lot more blood to just let it happen naturally. I am really scared to get a D&C, but the thought of having a MC at home again is even worse. So, my question is can anyone tell me a little about the D&C process? How long does it take? Do you go completely under? What is the recovery like? Thank you!

What can I do next?

So What Happened?

I just wanted to thank everyone for all of their kind words. I was so much less scared going into the D & C because of all the responses I got. I did have it yesterday and although it was emotional horrible the procedure itself wasn't so bad. All of the nurses and doctors were fantastic and I recovered pretty fast. Now I just need to start recovering emotionally. Thanks again ladies!

I am so sorry about your losses. I experienced miscarriages both ways. The first time it happened I was 10 weeks along, I started cramping and bleeding at home. I went into emergency and they said it was an inpending miscarriage, which means it was going to happen, they sent me home and it happened at home, it was a horrible experience and I had to be rushed back to the ER because I was passing out from losing so much blood. The second time, again I was 10 weeks along, I went in for the US and they could not find the heartbeat. I decided on the D&C, because I just did not want to go through it like the first time. The D&C was not bad, you are not put all the way out, but I told them I did not want any memory of it happenening and did not want to feel anything. I was told before I had it that some women just pop a motrin! There was no way I was just popping a pain pill, it is an intense pychological experience as well as a physical. I had pain and cramping for a few days and that was it. For me, personally, the D&C was a little easier, (I don't like saying that because it still is a loss of my baby) but it was so scary going through a miscarriage at home. Hope this helps, good luck and God Bless.

Sorry to hear your news.
I had a D & C done once before. It was actually pretty easy...I was scared and nervous and sad though of course. They wheeled me in, gave me some gas to breathe, and the next thing I knew, I woke up in recovery. I got a little sick (nausea) from being under, then the next couple of hours I remember feeling like I was very hungover. After I was able to eat some crackers and go to the bathroom, I was sent home. There I felt fine, just tired for the rest of the day. People told me I would be a little soar for a while, but I was not at all. Once I got home, it was not a big deal (feeling soar or tired, etc)
Good luck...hope you feel better soon.

I'm sorry for your loss(es). I've had two D & C's. The first time I was only like 8 weeks along, but my body wouldn't complete the process on its own. The second time I was 12 weeks. I asked my DR if we would try to let it happen naturally again and he said No. Apparently, the risk of hemmoraging is greater as we get farther along. He did the D & C the next day. Looking back, I'm so glad he did the procedure and I think there was more to his reason for it. I've talked to others who have MC'd at home and the stories were upsetting. At 12 weeks, both women were able to tell when they MC'd.

The procedure is quick and physically painless. The hardest part for me was signing the paperwork and realizing what was actually happening. I was put in a twilight sleep and the last thing I remember was getting the meds. I woke up in recovery.

I didn't have any pain after, except for the cramping and bleeding like a heavy period.

Again, I'm so sorry for your loss. Take care of yourself.

I just had a d&c after miscarrying last week at 13 weeks. It was very easy physically. I was at the hospital at 4 and home by 8. I did not have any cramping and very minimal spotting. I was put out and the procedure took about 20 minutes. I was at Palos Hospital and the same nurse was with me the enitre time that I was there and has called me since to check on me. After the procedure they took me out the back way to avoid the nursery. I think that as easy and miscarriages go I am happy that my doc chose to go this route as i do not thik that I could have handled it any other way. I am still very emotional of course as I think that things will get easier every day. If you need to talk message me, having just gone through this myself I would love to talk to someone about it!
I am so sorry about your loss.

I had an emergency D & C after my 3rd child was born and I was completely put under. I don't remember much about the procedure so I can't say that it was painful. The recovery time was minimal also. It really was not a terrible process and not anything to be really scared about.

sorry for your loss. i recently had a miscarriage at 16wks and the fetus was too big to just have the dnc. i had to deliver the baby and then have the dnc because the placenta didn't follow. it was an easy procedure, i went under and when i woke up i had absolutely no pain whatsoever. over the next week or so i had some bleeding and spotting almost like a very light period but no cramping or pain. it's nothing to be afraid of and i would rather have that then have miscarriage at home. plus there will be less bleeding afterward and you will be sure that everything is out.

It was a very simple procedure for me. I was also 10 weeks when we found no heartbeat. I was terrified more so to miscarry fully at home. I wanted it out immediately because knowing it was still there prolonged the grieving I felt. I thought the sooner I can start over the better I would feel, and that's what happened. I was at the hospital for a total of 2.5 hours that included registering, prep, procedure, and waking up. They gave me mild anesthesia to make me sleep. I didn't feel or sense a thing. I went to sleep in the OR and woke up in the recovery room a half hour later. My mom took me home and I was very tired from it all, and had some mild cramping too. I spent the next two days on the couch a little sore but was completely back to normal by the third day. I am very sorry for your loss.

Everyone has pretty much said it all, they're all correct. It's very easy, you won't feel a thing and is over very quickly. Then you can move on with your life instead of waiting for the MC which is such a sad process which sometimes has to end in a D&C anyway. I would agree with your doctors, just go have it done and get it over with. My heart goes out to you. I'm very sorry for your losses.

I am so sorry for your sadness. I can't imagine the emotional pain you are going through. I hope you surround yourself with lots of people who love you and, please know that others who have just met you are thinking of you. You have had many kind answers. I had a d & c's for another reason (had polyps in my uterus) when my first child was about two years old. As everyone described (i.e. twilight sleep, slight cramping/bleeding/discharge for a week. However, my first child took quite a while to conceive (well over a year). A relatively short time after I had a d&c, I became pregnant and had a second child. The dr. mentioned to me that some woman will see this kind of outcome. Whatever your outcome is - I hope you find peace!

I am very sorry for both your losses...unfortunately I had a D&C last July. It's not bad at all...I don't know if it was twilight or completely under, but I only remember being at a surgery center (my choice, the one I go to is GREAT) and the last thing I remember was rolling into the room and then waking up in recovery...the procedure is only like 15 minutes, but I was away from my husband for like an hour and a half (I took longer to come out of the anesthetic...not sure why this time, I don't normally)...and I had minimal pain...mainly cramping (but I cramp really bad during periods) so they gave me some meds to slow the bleeding also an antibiotic so as not to get an infection in the uterus and also something to shrink the uterus to its normal size...everything was fine...I was told to keep it light duty until the bleeding stopped...which was longer for me just because of my body...then I saw my OB for a follow up & he told me I was healing well...it's the same as delivering...nothing in "you" for 6 weeks to make sure you're fully healed and you don't get an infection. I was very strict about that too!

I am so sorry for your loss.

I had a similar situation many years ago. It's outpatient surgery and they gave me Twilight anesthesia (sp). I don't remember anything other than being wheeled into surgery and waking up afterwards. I had slight cramping and discharge for a week or so after the procedure. My body got back to normal within a month and about 6 months later, we conceived our second daughter.
