Quad Screening Results?

I got a very disturbing call from my OB this afternoon. I had blood work done last week (16 weeks pregnant) and the results are showing very strong positive for spinal bifida. I have to wait and will be contacted to set up an ultrasound with a specialist to do follow up testing. I guess I am looking for some reassurance from some other women who have been through this before. I have 2 friends with children who were born with this birth defect and am very scared. I know there can be false positives and thats what I'm hoping, but my OB was very serious when I spoke to him.

What can I do next?

I don't want to give you false hope, but these test are VERY inaccurate. I have had friends get positive results for downs syndrome, cystic fibrosis, and a friend of my sisters was advised through her whole pregnancy to abort because they told her they baby had sever spinal bifida and would not survive. She had multiple ultrasounds. She refused and her baby is fine. I am not saying there is absolutely nothing wrong, but again these tests have proven to be inaccurate. Be strong, have faith, and follow your heart. A mothers intuition is so strong. I am sending you hugs and prayers. I cannot imagine being given this kind of news. I wish you all the best!!! Good luck to you and your family :)

I suspect the serious tone is connected to his "duty" (think" malpractice) to tell you of any abnormalities in the screen. They are so inaccurate that I didn't even have any done, once I read the disclaimer that a positive result can be wrong and a negative result can be wrong......uh.......so I didn't bother at all.

I acutally got positive signs for downs and got very upset. end result, I have a beautiful healthy baby boy. NO sonogram or blood test can tell you exactly what is going to be unfortunaly only time will tell. I feel for you it is very hard.

My sister had her first baby 18 months ago and she opted to do the routine testing. One of the tests came back abnormal. They sent her for ultrasound, and more blood work and ultimately wanted her to do an amniocentesis. I know this decision to have a test is a very personal one but she asked me for my opinion/advice. I asked her if she was willing to terminate her pregnancy if the test showed that something was wrong. Her answer was a definite NO. I did the routine testing with my 3 children, not because I was willing to terminate but because I just wanted to be informed. Now I am pregnant with baby #4 and my doctor asked me if I'd like to do the testing or save some money and not do any of it. I opted to save money and not do the testing. I am not worried that something may be wrong. IF I had done the testing and something came back abnormal, I would still keep my baby. So, put your worries aside and know that you cannot control the outcome of any situation.

BTW: My sister had a very healthy baby boy! Tests can be wrong.

I too also had a test come back stating my child would have spinial bifida. The OB acted very serious and set up an ultrasound within 2 days of finding out the results. We went in for the ultrasound and everything was okay. Ultrasound Tech was very definate that all was well so we decided to opt out on the, o geez I forget the name, it's when they remove amniotic fluid and test from that. I would try not to worry until you have your ultrasound, unfortunately these tests do have lots of false positives and put mothers through needless stress. Good luck
