Nothing irritated me more (before I had kids) then the constant interruption by kids while I was having a phone conversation with their mom. Now here I am with 2 kids who are the ones who find it necessary to interrupt me regularly while I am on the phone. The time I spend on the phone is very minimal. I do my best to plan my calls when the kids are not around or at the very least, make sure they are involved in an activity, have a snack on hand etc to minimize the interruptions.

What are the rules while you are on the phone in your home? At what age did you implement these rules? Please share your suggestions and comments.

I learned to make a special busy box that had fun little things to do while I was on the phone. Stuff like whole punchers, stickers, toys etc. Only take this box out when you are on the phone . Just make sure it is interesting enough to keep them busy. It really works.

Hi Michelle,

Good luck! I think all kids do it no matter if there are rules in place. When I am on the phone, my kids usually will leave me alone as they know the rule, but then sometimes they just annoy the heck out of me. When I am done with the conversation, I will ask them, what's the rule, they say, when mommy is on the phone, don't interrupt unless an emergency, then I ask them what they were doing, they will say whatever it is and say I won't do it again. But it does happen. I hope someone has a better response, but I know this is a conversation that the moms often have in my moms group.

while i'm on the phone or in conversation with anyone for that matter they are to come to me and squeeze my hand. that signals to me that they need me and i then excuse myself from the conversation when the time is appropriate. i take care of what they need and then get back to my conversation. now don't get me wrong they don't always do this so i just point to the phone in my ear, excuse myself and tell them i will be off in so many minutes and i will then talk to them. it is the craziest phenomenon and never fails to have them swarm you when you are on the phone or going to the bathroom.
