my friends daughter is going to a formal sweet sixteen party. and wanted to know what kind of gift they should get her, and if money how much. she has not known the girl very long

maybe a gift certificate for a manicure and pedicure (usually $35 or so)...what 16 year old wouldn't like that!

If they were close friends I would say you expect a very thoughtful gift. Since they are not I think a card with $20 would suffice. The most important thing is to make sure she dresses accordingly. These days some of them are wedding formal. However some are still FL casual.

It would be money. I usually give about $50 because if it is formal and they are paying for sit down I figure like a wedding it should cover your meal. But then again all the ones I have been too were family.

Maybe a cute picture frame w/a pic of them, or the easiest thing would be a visa gift card. Then she could buy whatever she wanted.

Well I always make afghans for such party and they are a big hit. But if you don't have a special craft then I would suggest what you can afford in a card. There is no set amount. What ever the person can afford and wants to give. A lot of girls give jewerly but she would have to know her well enough to know what her tastes are. If she is a reader a good book would work. There is never a wrong or right gift as long as it's given from the heart.....
