Preschool Advice

My 5 year old just want off to Kindergarent and he did part time preschool the entire time. He is adjusting just fine and has not had any problems whatsoever. So, in my opinion PT preschool is suffcient.

I, also, believe you should do a part time program. SAHM's that utilize a part-time preschool or MDO are really able to offer the best of both worlds to their children.

I am fortunate to be able be an SAHM, but I do send my son to a 2 day MDO program and have been since he was 6 months old. He is an only child and needs the social skills and also I needed some "ME" time.

I think this will also get him prepared once for Kindergarden when he reaches 5. He is 3 now and he loves school. It is also easier when for them and you when you do it at a younger age than older. Or at least it was for me. He doesn't cry, (he use to for about 2 to 3 minutes, but fine after I left) and is anxious to go to school. It has been nothing but great for him!

The 3-day is probably best. Kids his age love preschool and benefit from the structure, learning and social aspects, but it really does wear them out! I wouldn't look to a full week until he's at least 4, and even then just a half day, or the typical MDO schedule of 9a - 2p.

You really don't need a full time preschool unless you are working and want to send him to something other than traditional day care. I teach preschool. We offer two day, three day, and five day preschool. The majority of the five day children are those that their parents work. My daughter has been in a three day program as soon as she was old enough to get in and LOVES IT. My boys in class usually take a little longer to get into the groove and cry a lot more than my girls but they soon love it too. I would just do three days unless you personally need him to go five. They are worn out so that day in between is such a blessing.

With my daughter we started with three days- but quickly moved to 5 days. With 3 days she just never seemed to get in to the routine. Once we switched to 5 days it seemed to be much easier. We asked the director at the preschool and she suggested the 5 day a week- and once my daughter had adjusted she said we could go back to 3 days if we wanted. It makes sense, it gave her a chance to be there all of the days the other kids were, and she got to know everyone and everything just like everyone else. Good luck!

Speaking from personal experience, my only concern with part-time is that maybe a child won't advance as quickly as others in his class. As a mom, I want my child to be the best and brightest at everything. We all do. So. while my youngest is currently in preschool part-time, I also work with him at home on the things his class is currently learning. I hope this helps!

Why don't you start out with three days and see how it goes. If he enjoys it and you see benefit, then up it to full time.
