Hi.
I have been enjoying this beautiful weather with my four year old. However, now I am covered in mosquito bites. And I'm 9 months pregnant. Can I put benzocaine or hydrocordizone on these bites without worrying about my full term fetus?
Any other remedies anyone can recommend?
Thanks,
L.

What can I do next?

I used iva-rest when I was pregnant for bug-bites & poison ivy. It worked really well. My OB recommended it to me.

I've heard 2 things...1. that people who eat bonannas are targeted much more by bugs/mosquitos...and 2. that drinking a bit of pickle juice (or eating pickles) makes them not come near you. I haven't tried it yet, but it's not harmful and worth a try. Also, skin so soft is nice, and seems safe. Good luck!

We use a product from a company called Melaleuca called Melagel. It can be used for insect bites, scrapes and burns....it's main ingredient is a high quality tea tree oil. It can be applied as often as you like without worry. We also make our own safe, non-toxic bug spray using Melaleuca products. Drop me a note if you'd like and I'll send you the recipe!

I have a bizarre family remedy that has been passed down at least 6 generations because it is so effective. Salt and spit. Spit on your finger, shake some salt on it and rub on the bite. It takes the itch away nearly immediately.

If you don't want to spit on your figure (I did say it was bizarre LOL) I would think that anything you can put on a full term baby would be OK to put on you.

Good luck with your impending delivery and arrival!

I broke out in hives for a few weeks when I was 3 months pregnant, and my OB said hydrocortisone was ok at that point. You can double check with your OB, but I think it should be fine. If you're worried about the steroids, you can get a cream called SARNA that's steroid free. The active ingredients are camphor and menthol. It works like a charm, and smells like lilacs! You can find it over the counter at any drugstore. Good luck!

Try rubbing some aloe vera gel on them...best straight from the plant. Also calendula/comfrey cream works well, or just a dab of lavender or tea tree oil. All can be found at a natural food store.

I don't recall hearing anything about either one of those creams if you're only using it in small amounts for bug bites. Call your OB and double check, that would be the quickest way to get an answer!
Good Luck with the delivery!

Dabbing toothpaste on bites stops the itching. Some say it has to be toothpaste with baking soda, but I've found that any toothpaste works, though some you have to put on again pretty soon.

At nine months all vital organs are formed and anything topical will not affect the baby. Feel free to soothe yourself with salves, creams, and ointments. :)

Hello! Congrats on your upcoming baby! I've also heard toothpaste works well. And, to avoid bites, use Listerine Mouthwash! The yellow medicine kind. Just put it in a spray bottle and you can spray your skin and the area (grass) around you. It works great!

I'm a magnet for moquitoes and used topical creams during my pregnancy. My OB said topical creams have very little absorbtion and therefore very little chance of affecting the fetus.
Good luck!
