Well, my husband and I have been trying for another baby for about 5 months now, and every month I've thought I was pregnant, just to be dissapointed. I was calculating my cycle wrong... it's 30 days, not 28. Now, I'm 3 days late but tests come up negative. I took one on the day my period was supposed to start and one last night, and nothing, but still no period! I've always had a very regular cycle so this is strange to me. Should I wait longer to test? How long? This is all very strange to me... with my first pregnancy it happened very fast and the first test I took was positive. Has any one else been through this?
Hello, everyone, and thank you all so much for your responses! I just got back from the lab at the hospital, and the results of the blood test were negative. I'm 5 days late now and decided I just wanted to know one way or the other. A lot of you said that stress could be a big factor, but the funny thing is that this is the first month I really haven't been stressed about it. I decided it will happen when it happens and I need to quit trying so hard, but when I missed my period I had hope... and started stressing about it then. I'm really dissapointed but I knew there was a good chance I wasn't. We'll just keep truckin' along and see what happens! Thank you all so much!
-Update....well, it hasn't even been 2 months since my last post and I just found out I'm pregnant! I'm about 5 1/2 weeks along and really excited. I'm due in December and can't wait!

This isn't unusual. I have always had negative readings with all of my children, up until I was 6 weeks along, or confirmed through blood hcg tests. Wait longer until testing, and remember many women take anywhere from six months to over a year to conceive. I am a healthy young mom that takes anywhere from 6 months to 24 months to conceive and the doctor says it is actually fairly common.

I have been dealing with secondary infertility for a while now. I'd like to share with you all of the things I wish my stupid OB and others had taught me long ago:
First, I HIGHLY recommend reading "Taking Charge of Your Fertility" by Toni Weschler, MPH. I recommend it to EVERYONE! I so wish this stuff was taught to us more and that I'd been recommended this book long ago! It will teach you how to chart (which I strongly recommend) and how to tell when you are fertile. So, so good to know whether you are trying to get pregnant or trying to avoid it. You can know whether or not you are pregnant without having to waste money on pregnancy tests if you know when you ovulated. If it was more than 18 days than you are most likely pregnant and then at that point you can know to take the test instead of taking a million of them over and over.
Second, Charting can tell you so much! When trying to get pregnant you should begin taking your temperature every morning the second you wake up and charting it on a graph. It will tell you if you are ovulating, if your hormones are right, if you are about to have your period, if you are pregnant. Start doing it immediately with a simple digital thermometer, a pencil and graph paper. Watch your patterns in your temperatures and get educated about how to read your graph. I just totally recommend it.
Third, there are over the counter ovulation kits that you can buy for $30 that will also help you pinpoint a little more when you are ovulating. They are not 100% accurate but they are a lot cheaper than other things and you can do this on your own at home.
Fourth, there are a lot of myths out there about getting pregnant. Like 28 day cycles (and ovulation occurring on day 14). Everyone is not supposed to have 28 day cycles (and even if you do it does not mean you ovulated on day 14) and just because yours are not does not mean there is anything wrong. Also, stress can cause your body to postpone ovulation, not postpone having your period. So look back at 2-3 weeks ago to see if stress is a factor. Stressing right now won't cause a miscarriage and it won't cause your period to be postponed.
Fifth, know that no one ever regretted getting help and education too early. Infertility specialists will tell you that six to 12 months is plenty of time to try to get pregnant.
If anything, learn from your experience to be more sensitive to others. Giving advice like "relax" and "have fun" doesn't help. One in six couples have difficulty getting pregnant. It's more common than most people think.

There is often many false results on pregnacy tests.
The best thing to do is relax. Trust that whether you
are pregnant or not is perfect for you at this moment.
I personally would make it a matter of prayer and meditation.
When I go deep inside there is a calm and understanding,
I invite you to do the same. It's wonderful that you want
this child so much. Simply trust and take the test again when it feels right for you.

YES! A very good friend of mine went through this exact thing about 2 weeks ago. She had been trying for 9 months to conceive with her second child and was very regular with a 30 day cycle. The day she missed her period in Feb she took a cheap dollar store prego test and it was negative. She took another one the next day and same thing. So, she was confused too. She waited about 3 or 4 more days and bought a $7 one from the drug store..and it came out very positive! I think her body was just not emitting enough pregnancy hormone for the cheaper tests to work. We asked the pharmacist about this and he said the drug store brands all are 98% effective. Anyway, GOOD LUCK to you! We had to try for 11 months with my daughter after getting prego on the first try with our first kid. Weird. But the Lord works in mysterious ways...who knows when HE wants your second one to come right? But I do hope you are prego as we speak!!!

Hi K.,
You might want to wait a few more days before you take another test. The earliest, and I mean the very earliest, you can tell if you're pregnant or not is 10 days after ovulation. That's pretty early though. This has happened to me where I took a test and it came back negative, didn't think I was pregnant, but then several days later went back and looked at the test I took and sure enough, there was a very faint double line. I'd wait a few more days and take it again. Often you have to wait several hours before you can really tell you're pregnant or not.

I actually had this problem with my first one. I always had very regular periods. Then I went on birth control the got off and I would go three months with out having one. So it was very frustrating. The doctor said that I was ovulating just not having a period. I would wait just a little longer. If you do get too impatient there are two medications that work great together the first I forgot the name it makes you have a period so you can get a schedule the second is clomid it is a low fertility drug. After doing 3 months of this we finally concieved. However beware. I thought it would be like that for the second one so we didn't bother having birthcontrol. I am expecting again in March they will be 14 months apart.
Stress can also be a problem in conceiving. My doctor said that could have been one reason why we had such a difficult time having the first one because we wanted one so bad. Kind of like a watch pot never boils. Hope some of that helps.

Hi K.,
I would wait a little longer, but keep in the back of your mind that you may not be pregnant.
With my first son I didn't know I was pregnant until 2 1/2 months. I missed my period (which was unusually light), I was nauseated every morning. I even had a blood test, which at the time was the absolute and final word. It showed negative. My DR check me out and told me that it would go away. Well it did nine months later.
Finally after ALL of my friends and family disagreed with my phyisician, I took another pregnancy test (after my second missed period) and low and behold my little guy showed up.
Good Luck and take care

When my husband and I started trying, I thought it'd be easy like the other two (2 months and 1 month). So after the 1st month, when I was late (and I'm never late) and my stomach felt a bit funny and I had to pee more, I took a pregnancy test. Negative! I took them over the next few days until I had a light period (same as my second pregnancy). Still not pregnant.
Now it's 8 months later and I know I wasn't pregnant. Sometimes I think it catches, but then doesn't take. It's dissappointing, but if numerous tests say your not, you probably aren't.
Sorry!

I had the same situation also with the 2nd pregnancy. Whether the # of days of cycle are normal or not, it's figuring out when you are ovulating - in the middle of your cycle or is it some other time. I'd recommend getting the ovulation kit with 30 sticks in it so you can figure this out. I finally figured out I was ovulating at the END of my cycle. It took 7 months to figure this out & we got pregnant the next month.
Also, I found with the pregnacy tests (both times) that I only got a positive reading at least one week after the expected period. Otherwise, they turned out negative or a result that was inconclusive.

It is best to wait 7-10 days after your missed period to test. If after that period of time the test is still negative and still no period then talk to your doctor about doing a blood test to determine if you are pregnant (the blood test can pick up lower levels of hormones than a home test). If the blood test is negative it might be that you haven't got your period because of stress (wanting to be pregnant and it not happening month after month can make you stressed out).

My sister-in-law had a false negative with my nephew. So the pregnancy tests aren't always 100% accurate anyway. However, so you don't go broke at the bank buying pregnancy tests, I know that the Dollar Tree ones were accurate when I was first pregnant with my son - although a friend of mine got a false negative with those as well. So sometimes I think it could be a combination of the woman and the pregnancy test brand she is using.

With both of my pregnancies I had to wait a full week after missing my period to finally get a positive pregnancy test result. I purchased several different types of tests, but each couldn't detect the hormones early on. The ones that advertise that they can detect pregnancy early didn't even work for me, even though I followed the directions on the package exactly. I don't know how common it is, but I do have one other friend who had the same problem as me.
I suggest you try testing in another couple days. If the wait is too torturous, see if your doctor will run a blood test.

with pregnancy tests that you buy over the counter there is a possibility of receiving a false negative result (meaning the test says you are not pregnant when you really are). Pregnancy tests pick up a hormone (called HCG-Human Chorionic Gonadotropin)that the placenta secretes into the blood stream. Your kidneys filter HCG and it ends up in your urine. If you are 3 days late, you could very likely be pregnant. The zygote (cells that will form the baby, yolk sac, and placenta) are most likely implanting itself into the lining of your uterus (this happens around 2 weeks of gestation and is complete around the end of the 3rd week). The placenta is beginning to form. You have to have some of the placenta formed for a pregnancy to detect HCG in your urine. If you are very regular like you say you are, you're most likely pregnant-there's probably not enough HCG in your urine for the pregnancy test to show a positive result.
My sister in law knew she was pregnant and took test after test with a negative result (remember false negatives are possible, where as false positive results are not possible). She had to convince the doctor's office to give her another pregnancy test and sure enough it was positive. Hang in there.

The tests can be strange things. I was on the pill and nursing my 10 month old, so I hadn't had a consistent period. Then one day, I woke up and got sick out of the blue. I started seeing babies and got all mushy with them. So I took a test and it came back inconclusive. I ended up going down to the health department to get the test because their tests are pretty accurate. Turns out I was already 3 1/2 months pregnant! It could be that the test isn't registering a positive because you aren't far enough for it to pick up, I'm guessing. Hopefully you are this time. :) I would wait a couple of more weeks, try taking a test again and possibly take one at your local health department; they usually offer them for a low cost or even free.

I've been through this exact same thing. Since your trying to get pregnant, 3 days late doesn't always mean your pregnant. I would wait out the rest of the month without doing another pregnancy test. If your period still hasn't shown up, then do a pregnancy test. Usually within a month of not having a period you'll start seeing the signs of pregnancy; swollen and tender breasts, morning sickness etc. Who knows. Maybe your stressed out a little bit too, and thats why your period hasn't started yet. But try waiting the rest of the month out til mid March, and if you still haven't had your period, then deffinatly do the pregnancy test again.

I took 4 pregnancy tests that came out negative, and on my way home to take the 5th I got my period. My cycle is regular like clockwork, and sometimes it happens. My husband is a physician and that's what he recommends, so I trust the advice. Even though this didn't happen last time for you, every pregnancy is completely different. On the next baby, I was late..but NEVER tested pos on a home test! Finally a week later I thought I had gotten a UTI so I went to the doc. They did the pg test as a side thing since AF hadn't appeared (which wasn't really all that strange since it was only 2 months since the miscarriage). Well, the blood test showed I was pg and I have a soon to be 6 yo to show for it. My third baby took 2 tries..but showed up on the home test and this last one showed right away. I guess you can't assume all tests will work...even variations within the same box could be a problem. But, as much as you'll hate to hear it..it's simply a waiting game now. I wish you good luck!

Keep in mind that the hormone the pregnancy test looks for in the urine may not be detectable by the test until you are at least a week late. Hormone levels vary from person to person and from pregnancy to pregnancy. Each child you have will probably be a little different. Just try not to stress!!! Stress alone can cause a late period, and in this case false hope. Try and be patient, even though I know it must be like torture!!! Also, all OTC pregnancy tests are the same. None of them will tell you any sooner than another no matter what they say or how much they cost!! If you are so desprate, if you go to the hospital and request a pregnancy test with BLOOD, it will tell you if you are even one day post conception (technically two weeks pregnant)and you will never get a false negative result. Pregnancy starts at the beginning of your last cycle, not at the moment of conception. With urine tests you can get false negstives, but not false positives. If there is even the faintest little line you can barely see, you are pregnant! Hope this helps, good luck;-)

Like many others i got pregnant with my first baby very quickly. I have very irregular periods, so it's hard for me to tell when to test. With our second, it took 10 months for it to finally happen! I was beginning to get worried but my doc said i shouldn't get worried until we've been trying for at least a year, and then they can do some tests if we want. With my periods, without birth control pills, i could be anywhere from 3 weeks early to a whole month late. I've never tried the fertility things they mentioned, but after 10 mo. of trying, and finally getting pregnant, my kids are 3 yrs. difference and have the same bday. Also, with any pregnancy test, home or blood, you are more likely to get a false negative than a false positive. Other women have told me that they got very clear positives with their first pregnancy, and then didn't get a positive until they were 3 months along with their second pregnancy. Weird, huh? They'd already been to their OB and had an ultrasound, but the pee sticks just didn't work.
I used an online fertility calendar with my second. I tried to load it up for you, but it looks like they've removed it from their web site. all you did was put in the length of your cycle and the first day of your period, and it charted out the best fertile days and when to test, and kept track of it for you forever. I wonder if there are any others like that out there? The one I used used to be at conceptionstore.com
And as for pregnancy tests, I have only ever bought the Equate ones from WalMart. I like the $4 price tag better than $12-16. But I've also been told that the dollar store ones work great, too. That ought to help on the financial end of this ordeal.
If you have good insurance, you can get a blood test done at your doctor's office that is much more precise than a pee stick.
I wish you the best of luck, and I hope you get your positive soon!

Wow - this takes me back. I tried for 18 months with my first and every month I went through a million pregnancy tests because every time I got a negative, I would just figure I took the test too early and so I'd take one again the next day. My husband always joked that we should have purchased stock in EPT. Anyway, here are some things I learned from my experience.
1. Just because you've always been regular doesn't mean you will continue to be - things change over time.
2. Not all pregnancy tests are created equal. Different brands are made to detect HCG at different levels so some will take longer to detect pregnancy than others.
3. Just because you get pregnant easily one time doesn't mean you'll get pregnant easily again. Conversely, just because you have trouble one time doesn't mean you will always have trouble.
Making a baby is not an exact science which can be really frustrating. And I completely understand how difficult it can be to not get pregnant when you want to and to not know why. Hang in there. I know it is not easy, believe me, but if you can try to be patient each month and wait as long as possible to take a pregnancy test, you'll save yourself a lot of moments of disappointment - not to mention money along the way. Good luck to you!

My first suggestion is to go see your doctor and get a blood pregancy test. Not a urine test, you can do that at home and pay less. Blood tests are the most accurate. I would also give it a few more days. One thing I know from experience is that when you want to be pregnant, you can psyc yourself out, and that can put off your period. I have been trying to get pregnant for three years now. I have two healthy children (and I had no problems getting pregnant with both of them), so after a year of trying I went to see a doctor. If it takes much longer for you, I would see what your doctor has to say. I ended up having Polycystic Ovarian Disease, which is where the ovum attaches itself to your ovarie instead of traveling down to be fertilized, which causes a cyst and prevents future ovulation. If you are not getting pregnant, there may be a reason inside your body. Stress is also a big thing that can be keeping you from getting pregnant. HANG IN THERE!!!

I've also had a difficult time in the past getting pregnant. I've found it was because of my body weight. Every time I've gotten pregnant, I've been on a diet & lost 10 to 15 lbs. Have you tried checking the test about an hour after you took it? My very faint line didn't show unless I waited a little while. The same thing happened to my sister. Day by day the line got darker and showed sooner. Good luck. I've been there.

I have gone through what you are going through before. It is so hard. We conceived our first really fast and things were great. But after having a baby your body is different. Trying to get pregnant with our third took a good 4-5 months, and trying for our fourth took 7 months before we finally conceived. And I would get really, well almost depressed when I found out I wasn't pregnant. But what I have noticed is even when your cycle was really regular before having a baby, it's different after having one. Are you keeping track of your cycle on a calendar? And stress is a major problem, so try to relax. Besides, making the baby is fun too ;) To how soon should you test again? I would say wait a few days (I know that is torture, my husband has had to take the tests away from me so I won't test again too soon) and if you STILL haven't started, retest.

Hi K.. My periods have always been irregular. With my last pregnancy I thought I was pregnant but wasn't sure because it wasn't unusual to go months without a period. I kept feeling nauseous so I took two pregnancy tests two weeks in a row. They were both negative. The next week I was still feeling nauseous and also had some cramping. I went to the doctor and I WAS pregnant - WITH TWINS!! I would wait a little longer and if you still think you are pregnant, make a visit to your doctor.

I wouldn't worry about it just yet. I'd wait a week and if you haven't started then, perhaps take another test. The truth is, if your cycle is anything like mine, it can go out of whack over little things. Stress, change in diet, etc. And pregnancy does change your body. So even though you've always been regular, perhaps something changed with your first pregnancy. Also, five months really isn't that long. What I've told others is give it a year. If you haven't concieved within that year, then I'd ask your OB/GYN or general practitioner for their advice. There are a few simple very non-invasive tests they can do to determine if everything is working correctly and what to do if for some reason they're not. (Just don't wait five years like we did to consult a physician.)

K.,
Well by now you may know that you're pregnant, but if you don't have you been to the website www.twoweekwait.com? It's a great place to go over your symptoms with other women who are calculating their days and wondering about their symptoms. I had so much fun there when I was trying for my daughter.

with my last 2 pregnancies, i was atleast 5 weeks along before any tests showed positive, your body may not be producing enough of the hormone that the tests look for yet, so just wait a few weeks and try again, i know those can be a long few weeks but you should know for certain then.

You can usually get a blood test at a hospital in their "mini-lab" for around $10. Blood tests are much more accurate and can tell you a lot sooner than the, um, other kind. They usually have your results within an hour. Good luck!

I have definantely been through that. I tried for a year to have my daughter, finally with the help of fertility drugs she came.
At one point my period was a week late! Of course the test was negative, and I finally started. My doctor told me that I should wait at least a week to test, since things in life, (ie - stress) can delay your period. Good luck to you!

I was in a similar situation a few months ago. I had always been regular and my period was late. I think I took three pregnancy tests and they all came back negative and I was not pregnant. I started five days late I think. But a few months later I was able to get pregnant. Sometimes our bodies are just doing things we don't understand. My sister-in-law who has always been very regular went ten weeks without a period and was not pregnant. I suggest waiting a few more days and if you feel like you need to, call your doctor. Oh, and like you my my first pregnancy was very fast and came back positive quickly. Perhaps your body is under stress and is compensating...

I usually wait until I had missed my period for a week. I usually am regular but once in awhile I was a week late. And that drove me crazy when I was trying to have my second. Before I got pregnant with my second (I am 7 months along). I actually missed my period, and the following month I was pregnant. It was kinda hard to not take a test everyday. But that month was hard, because I was unsure. And when I got a positive test, I took one when I thought I would be a week late, after the missed period, and it came back positive. So my advice is to wait and try after a week. Waiting is tough but it saves you money to wait.

Hey K., the same thing kidof happened to me, I missed my period, took a test, and nothing. But then I started to feel kindof tired about a week later and took another test, and it was positive, so I would recommend wating awhile and testing again. Good luck!
