A friend of mine called me numerous of times wondering if she was pregnant. Its been a while since she's been pregnant. She's aware of all the different changes out there. She missed her period. She's regular. She's been calling me asking me for advice. For a few wks now she's been having some cramping..(she thought it could be her pre-menstrual symptoms) on the sides, breasts are very sore, she says. No spotting the day before her period...none at all, which made her worry. She's been feeling bloated as well, so again she figured it was part of the menstrual symptom. She's about 4 days late. I told her to take a home pregnancy test, just to give her some peace of mind. So..she did...I was on the phone with her when she did it for support, plus she kept calling me. So...she took it, and she said not even a minute wait..it said..PREGNANT. She took that at about 6:30pm. I told her not to worry and if she wanted to take the 2nd pregnancy test? She said, no she'd wait till tomorrow morning. So..she did...and again..not even a minute wait..it read pregnant again. Now she's wondering what to do? She's been out of the loop for a long time. She's asking me what should she do? Call her regular physician? Contact her OB/GYN already? Who should she see first? Oh, the other part to this is she was diagnosed with HPV, which worries her and she's seeing someone for that. The HPV is being under control. So...any suggestions on what to tell her? What should she do? Where to start? She's calling me right now...HELP?

What can I do next?

Hi Celeste,
Just refer your friend to her OB/GYN. Once she is there she wll be able to ask all of the questions or concerns she might have. Good luck to your friend. I'm sure everything will just be fine.

She needs to call her regular doctor, he/she will refer her to anyone that he/she feels necessary for her to go to. Plus, she may get in faster with an OB if her doctor does refer her over. Where is the father of her new unborn child, she needs to talk to him so he can help her work threw this and take some of the stress off you. I agree with some of the other advice, your kids and family first, there is nothing wrong with you being there for her, but she needs a doctors advice. Take care!

Depends on her health plan. If she requires a referral then call the PCP first. If not, then call the OBGYN first. Especially with HPV as a concern even if it's under control. Congrats to her!

Her next phone call should be to her regular physician. He or she is the best person to give her direction. Most health insurance companies have you go to your main doctor first before being referred to a specialist, and yes she should call now, not later since she has other health issues. It sounds like she is panicking, and you can be a support but you must tell her to call her doctor right away. This is the only logical next step, and she needs to get some perspective. You are a good friend, but you also have a family and a full-time job that come first. (Remind her of that if she is calling too often!).

Have her call her OB first. They usually don't want to see women until the 8th week but considering the HPV they may want to get her in early.

Then she should get some prenatal vitamins and an extra folic acid supp (she should start the folic acid ASAP the regular vit can wait for a meal.)

Then she should get a bottle of ginger ale pour some into a champagne flute and celebrate (I assume this is happy news).

Also as soon as her pants start to feel the least little bit tight she should start a baby registry at Target (she can just register for one little item like socks) so that she gets on their mailing list. This way she'll start getting some coupons for maternity clothing.
