Pregnancy After Ectopic Pregnancy Surgery

Hi Amy,
I had an ectopic pregnancy in 1982 before it could be detected early. Consequently I lost my fallopian tube. My husband and I started trying again 2 months later. We had to wait because I had lost too much blood to begin any earlier.
I was pregnant in 5 months, and remember that was with just 1 tube. I carried the baby for 34 weeks, but he was still 7 lbs at birth. Just a little jaundice. He is now a fine 26 year old.
I hope this helps. I remember how much I wanted to get pregnant. Just be patient, it will happen.

My girlfriend had an ectopic pregnancy at 8 weeks I belive. She got pregnant again 4 months later and had a very normal pregnancy and carried the baby full term ;-) She was under a very close watch through the entire pregnancy but everything was ok. I am sorry to hear about your loss and difficulties with your doctor. I was 12 weeks pregnant when my doctor discovered that the baby did not have a heart beat. It had taken 10 months for us to get pregnant the second time. I asked him how long I needed to wait until I should try again (I was convinced it would take me 2 - 3 years). He told me to wait one cycle. My DNC was performed on the 20th of December. I had my January period on schedule. A few days later we began to try again. In February I did not have a period, so I called the doctor and went in for a check up. I was pregnant with twins. They are almost 8 years old and very healthy.

I am sorry for your loss. I don't have the answers to your question, but I can relate to your fears and what you have been through. I miscarried once and just recently had surgery to remove a ruptured ectopic pregnancy. I now only have one fallopian tube and I am going to be seeing a specialist to help calm my fears. I am terrified about another pregnancy because as you know, it is very traumatizing to go through the loss of your pregnancy regardless of how it takes place. I had a ectopic pregnancy in 2007 and I was scared to get pregnant again but i decided to try again in 2008 so i started taking my prenantal vitamins everyday and trying to do it when i ovulated but my friend told me to this position where you do it up side down. and i got pregnant soon after. I was so scared when the doctor told me was pregant that i cryed by the way i got pregnant october 2010 a am now 5 months pregnant. My baby is almost one pound now and I hope and pray it make it the full term because I am also diabetic. good luck! have faith and pray to god thats what i did.

It sounds like you have gone through a lot recently, and a lot of disappointment. I'm so sorry.

I have not had an ectopic pregnancy, but I did have one early miscarriage and I ovulated within several weeks after miscarrying. From what I've heard your body pretty much gets back to ovulation within a month or two after a miscarriage, same as it would after childbirth if you weren't breastfeeding. (Exclusive breastfeeding can delay the return of fertility).

You might want to start charting your morning temperatures, that will tell you when you are ovulating. for more info I'd recommend the book The Art of Natural Family Planning or the book Taking Charge of Your Fertility. both have great info on reading your body signs and using that knowledge to achieve or avoid pregnancy.

First - let me say how sorry I am that you had to go through that.
I had an ectopic in Sep 08 - had a D&C and Methotrexate. Took a break from fertility drugs and went to acupuncturist. I got pregnant in Dec 08 - had a beautiful baby boy in Aug 09.

When I had my ectopic, my pregnancy levels were very high ( I think over 10,000). They had to give me two shots of methotrexate before it worked and they almost had to take me to surgery. After my levels went down to zero which took 6 weeks I was alble to start trying again. This has been a long road for us so now we are doing IVF and so hopefully it will happen pretty fast. I completely understand what you're going through. I don't think I can tell you specifically how long it took me to get pregnant again but I can tell you that after having 12 miscarriages and having my right ovary, right tube and part of my left ovary removed, I was able to carry my son to full term. I'm not going to tell you that the pregnancy was easy, but it is certianly possible with the right medical care. I am a patient of Dr. Briant Herzog at Plano Presby. After all we went through, my husband and believe that our son would never have been here with out Dr. Herzog. We are thinking about trying again for another baby but we made him promise that he wouldn't retire before we delivered, lol - I'm not doing it unless Dr. Herzog is walking me through the whole thing. Please don't give up - i would do it all over again and more.

I had an ectopic in 2006. I was 6-7 weeks along. I had to have surgery which eventually led to my left tube being closed b/c of scar tissue. We were pregnant exactly one year later and now have a beautiful 2 1/2 year old daughter. I am very,very sorry for your losses. Beyond my grief that I still go through sometimes missing that ectopic baby which we named Lucas, I just miscarried tonight, so I know how you must be feeling. I will keep you in my prayers, Amy.
