Hello, So I have all my document ready for the Pre-K round up next week at our school in the neiborhood, so this will be the schhool My kids will go to for as long as we live here. My question is, seeing as this is our first child going to school, What happens? The lady I talked to said to come early, so we will be there and wait, but Is it first come first serve, or will some other child get in before us for whatever reason? Do they talk to the kids or What? I have no clue, Im hoping its first come first serve. Its DallasISD btw.

What can I do next?

I'm in CFBISD and round-up was just an informational session. no registration was done on that day. when it was time to register, I just dropped it off... took 5 seconds...

Ask the lady what you asked here.
Because, each school is different.

every school district is different in how they handle this.

Our school district just implemented new ideas which are awesome. On their KG meet/greet....they actually took the kids for a bus ride! Talk about being proactive in facing the kids' fears! Love, love, love this new process.

Anyway, the parents handled the paperwork while the kids explored the classrooms & playground. Then the bus ride, with drinks/snacks following. A great time for all! Oh, & the KG screening appt was made during this time, too.

My only complaint would be: I think the screening should be 1st.....to weed out the kids not ready.

We just dropped off our paperwork and they gave us the date to come to the school and meet the teacher. I'm thinking they said to come early so 100 parents don't show up at once.

Since every school and district is different, I would call back and ask these questions of whatever lady it was you talked to.
At our school the K teachers meet with the kids, ask them some questions, have them draw a little something, basically see where their fine/gross motor and social skills are. It's no biggie, they just want to have well balanced classes.
But like I said, CALL the school, especially if it's impacted, it could be VERY different for you!

We are in Keller ISD and all we had to do was fill out some basic paperwork, contact info etc. And verify our address. Then we had an appointment in August for registration where my son had to come with me then he met with the teachers and they did an assessment with him while I completed registration.

Yep, each district is different.

Here they gather all of the kids together in groups and take them to the current kinder classes. They see what the room looks like, the teacher talks about what they will be learning.. etc. This does NOT mean these are the actual classroom or teacher, your child will end up with in the fall.

In the meantime the parents hear about the school.. the administration etc.. information is handed out. Forms will need to filled out.. Then if you have not already made copies of forms, they will have you make copies to be left with the school, collect forms etc..

Usually our PTA is there to give out information about the Back to School Social.. Some summertime gatherings on the school grounds for new families.. Opportunity to order the school supplies, Order the new Tshirts for the new school year. for the fall.. etc..

Take cash or a checkbook...so you can preorder stuff and be done.

It goes really fast, so tfey to get the contact information of different people so you can call them and ask them questions.. The PTA President, the New comers Chairman.. The Kindergarten lead parent.. etc..

Dallas ISD does not have universal pre-k. To attend, you have to qualify by income or english must be your child's second language. Even if you DO qualify, you may not get in to your home school. There are often not enough spots there is normally a waitlist.

If you qualify, it is first come, first serve. You need a copy of your child's ss card and birth certificate. You also need proof of address - like a current electric bill. Make copies of those and head up to the school and ask for the enrollment packet.

If you do NOT qualify, there is still an option. There will be limited slots for tuition based pre-k thoughout the district. Ultimately, their will probably be some sort of lottery for those spots. Its supposed to go before the board this month or next month.

To answer your direct question: At the round up, you will meet the principal, the principal will explain registration information and who qualifies to attend and then you will go to classrooms and meet teachers. You can ask teachers what skills your son needs and also look at the student work on the wall to see what the students are doing.

Good luck! Message me if you have more questions. I've been up at my neighborhood school pestering away for the past three months. :)

Wow, our roundup was very simple compared to others! (This was for Caddo Mills ISD) All we did was fill out some paperwork so we can get on the list. I didn't know what to expect either! It began at 4, so I was there atleast 10 minutes early and it was a ghost town. I walked in and a teacher asked me if this was for Pre-K or K, and I said K, and she handed me a packet of papers and I sat down at a table to fill them out. Another teacher walked over and invited my daughter to do an activity while I filled the stuff out. Once I was finished, that was it! The school now has all of our information and I expect they will be contacting us soon with the next step.

Like others said, different districts do different things. At our school, they have an optional "welcome to Kinder" afternoon where entering Kinder kids get to sit in on a functioning Kinder class for an hour. Then at the actual Round Up, our school has "stations", the first station is a name tag (obviously) followed by paperwork tables that you either hand in all your paperwork or get the items you are missing. Then, you wait for the next available teacher to take the next group on a tour and explain the school and where everything is from the library down to the nurses office. You can ask all the questions you have while on the tour. At the end of the tour they then load you up with all the new forms for the new year to sign up for things like PTA or to be a volunteer in your childs classroom etc... You can also pay at that time in our case for a school directory (it's $7 at our school but well worth it!). And that's really it.
