Pre-eclampsia

I had pre-eclampsia with my first baby starting at 32 weeks and ended up as an induction at 37 weeks. Vaginal delivery with no complications.

Diagnosed with it again on my second pregnancy starting at 26 weeks. Ended up having to delivery at 35 weeks and 2 days due to the PE getting severe. C-section for breech baby. She was tiny (4lbs) but perfectly healthy. No complications.

Has anyone had severe PE and gone on to have another pregnancy? I always thought id have a large family, and I'm having trouble coming to terms with the fact that i may be 'done'.

Please no rude comments. I am very thankful for my two healthy and beautiful children.

I had SEVERE Pre-e with my ds (started 2 month in, delivered at 27 weeks). We are going to ttc in August, and my ob said that there is a med that has had great results. I will be taking it beginning the minute I know I'm pg. I don't remember the name, but I would ask your ob about it. I know several women who had uncomplicated pregnancies following their pre-e kids, but with the severe complications in my pregnancy, my ob will be taking all precautions! I asked him if I was crazy for wanting another, and he said no, that with this drug my chances for a longer pregnancy are very good. Best of luck!

I had severe pre-e with my first @ 38 weeks, stroke high BPs, possible pulmonary edema, and narrowly avoided an emergency c-section.

Still got pre-e with my second, but I was watched more closely and we induced at 37 weeks and I never got as sick.

I was tested for underlying conditions but nothing turned up. I figure my odds of getting pre-e again are about 50%, but my odds of being injured in another pregnancy are about the same as if I biked to work every day for a year. So not bad.

Even with two beautiful kiddos, I'm still considering a third child. I would like to loose some weight first. Even though being over-weight is a very small risk factor, it is the only one in my control. (I can't change my genetics!).

Check out the forums at the Preeclampsia Foundation, I've found them a great source of information and support: http://www.preeclampsia.org/

I'd also recommend having a pre-conceptioin consultation with a MFM specializing in high risk pregnancies, they can help with testing for underlying conditions and give you a better idea of your odds based on your personal medical history. https://www.smfm.org/default.cfm

Good luck with whatever you decide!

Hmmm -I'm assuming you've discussed this in detail with your doctor? I had post-partum pre-eclampsia with my first (never knew there was such a thing until it happened), and they watched me like a hawk with my second, but things were fine until around the 36th week when my blood pressure started climbing. I was finally given the PIH diagnosis after two weeks of bedrest and they wanted to go ahead and induce, so we went that route -never had full-blown pre-eclampsia again. I was still told that it's fairly random and you never can tell from pregnancy to pregnancy if it's going to happen. Two in a row (and early on) seems pretty crazy though. Honestly, I would really listen to the doctors and just go with what they say. You don't want to get yourself in a situation at 23 or 25 weeks. We never planned to have more than two, so that wasn't a big deal to me. Not to be "ugly" or anything (and I KNOW that pre-eclampsia happens in many women who are in their 20s and early 30s and not an ounce overweight -in fact many doctors will tell you that has nothing to do with it) but if you ARE older and/or overweight or have any regular blood pressure issues, I would seriously look at those factors that you could possibly fix (not the age thing obviously) if you want to try for another.

You may be able to have more. Talk to your doctor. If he advises against it, and you want to grow your family, you could consider adoption.
I wish you the best :)

I had pre eclampsia with my 1st that turned into full blown eclampsia (seizures) right after I delivered. I was in a coma in ICU. I had many problems post partum as well. It wasn't pretty. Luckily, I fully recovered and baby was fine. With my second, I had no problems. It was a very normal pregnancy, delivery, and healthy baby.

That is a hard choice because PE can be so severe as I experienced. After my first I begged my doctor to tie my tubes because I NEVER wanted to go through that again. He wouldn't do it because I was too young (thank goodness).

Have you seen a Maternal and Fetal Specialist? I think that is what they are called. I would see a specialist for a consultation and really discuss it with him.her to see what they think. Good luck!
