Potty Traning - Boise,ID

My mom swares she had this book that taught her to teach my brother and I to potty train in a day. She doesn't remember what it is called. Do you know of any good potty training books. I've gotten advice to wait until kids are ready which sounds reasonable to me. My daughter is 18 months old and is very interested in the toilet, tells me when she has poopy, and hates! getting her diaper changed. So I think she might be ready to at least start. Any advice? Any recommened books from moms that have been through potty training? I'm particularly interested in accomplishing it fast as opposed to dragging the training out (wishful thinking huh :-). Thanks!

What can I do next?

Hi KE,
NOTE: I agree with Sara, in most 3rd work countries kids are potty trained earlier, I guess because they can't afford or because is the way we were raised. I note that diapers size are getting bigger and bigger in here (USA) because we wait until they decide. I think kids are smart and they learn fast, as long as we do it with love and patience. If the parent is getting mad and disappointed because the kid is not doing fast enough the problem is the parent not the child, but you would be surprise as what kids are available to learn and do when are well directed. At the end it depends on the 2 of you.
I just start potty training but I am taking the slow rute, we start buying her books and I seat her in her potty while I read.
Of all the books out there my very favorite is Once Upon a Potty for girl of course.
Is very realistic, and I love that they actually they show some poo in the potty. Blieve it or not is also one of my daughter's favorite book too.
We also just got the Elmo Potty DVD and I am soon about to buy her a potty doll.
I hope an easy ad fast way to the potty training adventure.

I used a book called "Potty Training in a Day", and your mom is right - IT WORKS! My first son was 2 years 1 month and was trained in 1/2 day, with my second son, I used the book with an addition of a treat bowl and he was trained in 1 day. The best part is, they never had accidents - EVER - and I never had to ask them all the time if they had to go. It was awesome.

Now, all that being said, I would maybe consider waiting until at least 2 before you do it. although a lot of kids do potty train that early, I have heard of kids sometimes reverting later.

Good luck and happy potty!

I just finished potty training my 2.5 yr old son in just 1 day!! My other son was potty trained in two days. I saw a clip on the "Today" show called the "potty whisperer" by Wendy Sweeney that was very useful and totally worked. You can actually view the clip online. You can look up Booty Camp online as well and this is by Wendy Sweeney. However, she doen't recommend this method of potty training unless the child is 2,5 yrs old, but if you feel you child is ready, why not give it a try! Basically, you set the potty chair up and tell the child that if they need to go potty they must go to the potty chair. You tell them what you expect out of them and that if they choose to pee/poo on the floor, then it is their responsibility to clean up the mess (with parents help). They must clean up the mess, throw the paper towel in trash and placed the wet clothes in the laundry basket. You NEVER ask the child if they have to go potty. You allow them to be in control of their own body and show independence. The child will eventually get tired of cleaning up the mess and will end up going pee/poo in the potty. This method was very successful for my two boys. We did have several accidents the first day, but that was it. They both never had any issues with going poo in the potty, which a lot of kids do. I highly recommend this method of potty training. Again, you can check it out online. It's called "Booty Camp!" Good luck!

I think the book you want is "toilet training in less than a day" by Nathan Azrin. Here's a link to it on amazon:

http://www.amazon.com/Toilet-Training-Less-Than-Day/dp/06...

It's a great book! I like that you want to start now -- especially since your daughter is interested in the toilet and able to tell you when she has a poopy. I read somewhere that before disposable diapers came along, the average age for potty training in this country was 18 months. Now it's 36 months!

First, we are about the only country that waits "until the child is ready", most start when the baby can sit on a potty, and in 3rd-world countries, they use elimination communication.

As for books and videos. There are 1-day and 3-day training philosophies. I got a DVD from our library called "Potty Training in 1 Day".

I used Potty Training in a Day with my 2 1/2 year old and it didn't work at all. However, about 4 weeks after doing the "day of training" she just decided to start using the potty and has used it ever since, with only 2 accidents in the last couple months. So, maybe the "concept" worked, just not on that day. She's very control oriented and wants to do things on her own time, so that's probably why. Setting the timer and having her go didn't work at all. She would either flat out refuse to go or she'd sit on the potty and then after we took her off, she'd go. Now she does great. As far as getting it done quick...I'd wait until she is closer to 3. The more people I talk to, the more I found out that if the parent started the training before age 2 1/2, it took 4-6 months (yes months) to train them. The close the kid was to 3, it took a week or 2. Up to you. My daugther started showing interest at about 13 months, but understanding releasing the pee in the potty and holding it didn't come until she was older. Good luck!

Well, potty training can't be rushed, but some kids do go from diapers to nothing in days with no accidents. My oldest did.
I have 4 girls and they all potty trained differently. The best thing I found was to set the timer and bring them to the potty chair everytime it goes off. I set it for every 1/2 hour and then worked it up to 45 minutes, an hour etc. Some people say not to use pull ups, but I did and it did not slow down the training process (depends on the kid). If your daughter is showing an interest, I would run with it! Remember that sometimes there are set backs, so don't get discouraged! If you are really looking for a book, there is a huge selection at your local book stores.

Toilet Training in a Day by Azrin. Love it! Did it with both my boys and my daughter. My daughter has some sensory issues that we're still working with, but she totally got the idea. My friend has done it with her 5 kids and several other friends love it to.
