Hi,
sounds gross, but - take off the underwear. All it took was one accident on the floor for my son and he never did that again. He spent several days of a February vacation mostly naked (in the house only, of course). When he had the hang of it I put him in really loose shorts - still no undies for most of the week unless we had to go out.
Good luck!

Patience. My son is also potty training, and finally will poop in the toliet and no longer in his pants. I think it had to do with a meltdown I had while changing his poop in the underwear one day. Also, I constantly told him that it was awesome to poop in the potty with all the gross noises and echos and that his bum wouldn't hurt from sitting in the poop in his pants. I did set up a chart as well and said that if he pooped in the potty 6 times that we would have a mommy/son date. He has a little brother, so having mommy time is really important. He got to pick out big stickers to put on his chart for pooping, and little ones for peeing. And it helped to make a big deal of pooping in the toliet when he finally did it.

He's not "refusing" he's still learning. Susan H. is 100% spot on correct with her advice. You need to be patient and let him learn at his own pace although it's fine to use encouragement. Use positive reinforcement, but don't punish him or reprimand him if he's not doing it on your time table. You'll have more problems if you try to force the issue. Just stick with it and praise him for a job well done. Toilet training shouldn't be stressful for you or for him and it shouldn't be a battle of wills. So just buy lots of underwear, lots of rewards like crayons and coloring books, and tell yourself now that accidents are not failures and are acceptable.

My daughter was the same for 3 months. I bought the book "everybody poops." I then tried to catch her in the act and get her on the toilet. Every day I also emptied her poop into the toilet with her watching. It helped, and within two weeks, she was going on the potty. The good news is that once she did it a few times, she was done -- she was day and night trained. Hopefully your son will be the same way!

I also told my daughter every day after she had an accident that it was OK, that tomorrow she would poop on the potty. I think it helped her believe she could do it. I really think so much of potty training is helping them have the confidence to try to figure it out. So be his biggest cheerleader, get him to not feel ashamed or weird about the poop, and I am sure he will start putting it in the toilet.

One last thing, I let my daughter pick out undies, and I told her that when she pooped in the potty, she could wear her "special undies." I also bought her special "fruit snacks." So when we had successes, she got doubly rewarded.

we had this problem, we rewarded with hotwheels cars, they are cheap. If he went in his pants, he got them taken away, but got them back when he went on the potty. We prebought about 5-10 and had them sitting in their packages on the bathroom counter. When he went on the potty, he got to choose a car and open it right there. It took 2 weeks for him to get it down.

Potty training occurs in 3 stages:
1) peeing in toilet and mastery of it.
2) pooping in toilet and having mastery/ability for it
3) night-time dryness. This can take even up until 7 years old. This is normal. This is per our Pediatrician. Many Kindergarten kids as well, still wear night time diapers.

your son is has peeing learned. He still is going through pooping learning. This is normal.
And, for night-time, he will NOT have night-time dryness occur at the same time, just because he is peeing in the day-time, in the toilet.

"Diapers", the night time kind, does hold more. Its okay. He has not attained this phase yet, nor pooping in the toilet. It is a biological attainment.

My daughter, was wearing night time diapers, not pull ups, until she was 5 years old. Normal.

For any leaking accidents at night, use a water-proof bed pad directly under him. To make clean up easier for you. You can get it at Amazon. They have all kinds. This is where I got mine. I have about 4, which I use for my kids, and just switch them out and wash them as needed. No biggie.

Keep in mind, that "night-time" accidents will still occur, even if they are night-time dry and have the ability. My daughter, is 7 now. And she once in awhile still has accidents every blue moon. She even dreamed once that she was on the toilet, until she felt herself wet. It was funny and we just laughed about it. It wasn't her fault. She's just a kid. And she sometimes sleeps so deeply, she does not wake to go pee.

Don't put onto him, that you are disappointed in him. He is normal. He is STILL learning about toileting. He is still young.
Many kids, when still getting used to potty training, will poop in a diaper only. This is the process of it.... then one day he will be okay about going in a toilet. Its okay. Normal. MANY kids do this. It is a process.

Your son is still learning. He is daytime pee trained now. He still has to learn the pooping and much later, night-time "dryness" will occur. They say that boys are sometimes later in attainment of toileting.

All the best,
Susan
