Potty Training Question - Tampa,FL

We started potty training our 23 month old today. He has shown several of the readiness signs for a while and he's been telling us "pee pee potty" whenever he is peeing/peed in the diaper. This morning, we started by taking the diaper off and putting underwear on and explaining everything to him. The problem we are having is that he dribbles a little bit of pee often. Each time he tells us "pee pee potty" and willingly goes to sit on the potty but when he gets there nothing or very little comes out. In the course of 3 hours this morning, he went through about 12 pairs of underwear because of the frequent dribbles. He went "for real" 2-3 times. Any advice?

What can I do next?

It takes littles a while to connect the dots between sensations and results. It's possible your son isn't quite there yet, but he could be close.

Here's a wonderful, informative website you might find helpful. It gives a few variations on"readiness" checklists, plus tips on various training strategies, the best ages to start them, and the advantages and disadvantages of each approach: http://www.parentingscience.com/toilet-training-readiness...

Good luck. I hope you and your son have a positive adventure. If at any point it just becomes discouraging or infuriating for either of you, there is no harm in stopping and waiting for a little more maturity. Once a child is truly ready, training can happen in a week, or even a day, with minimal accidents.

when he's on the potty and done tell him to push the rest out, then tickle his tummy so he gets the feeling of fully emptying his bladder. My little guy "dribbled" a lot but after a couple days of doing this he understood to get all the pee out and hold the little bit in until next time.
Good Luck!!!

Can you try having him stand up? Sitting on the potty is more difficult for some little guys than others to go pee pee.

He may not be ready yet... if he's peeing a bit before he notices he has to go, he may need just a bit more time... but he's on his way : )

Try putting his feet in a pan of warm water... that will give him the urge to go and hopefully get most of it out... You might try setting him on the toilet a lot more often -like every 5 minutes- and every time he is still dry when he sits praise him (or stickers, or some kind of reward if you want to try a reward system). If he's not, don't come down on him over it but he doesn't get the praise.

We also went through this. He is learning how it feels to have to go and how to control it. We used pull-ups if it is only dribbles, they stay drier and you don't have 20 pair of underware to wash. We let our son keep them on as long as it was just a few drops. It is not a bad thing during the day while he is learning. Good Luck
