Potty Training Advice/suggestions

Hi out there,
I am in the midst of potty training my 3 year old boy. It seems that he is sitting on the potty all day long-whether or not he is doing pee pee's. Is this how you all felt during your potty training period?
It just seems with the time he is running to the potty and spends sitting on the potty there leaves no time for other activities other than the ones he enjoys while sitting on the potty.
Any suggestions, advice would be much appreciated.

What can I do next?

Hello! Potty training is sooo frustrating at times. I have a 3-1/2 yr old girl and 10 mo. boy. My daughter would sometimes sit and sit and found it to be a game to go into the bathroom. I think it is pretty normal for them to do that. Is he staying dry and going on the potty at all? I did a sticker chart and when she had so many stickers for actually going after a week she could get a toy she wanted. Bribery is sometimes a necessary evil. Good luck, T.

It seemed like Lucca would never get potty trained, but he finally did. We tried the book, Once Upon a Potty. We also threw Cherios in the potty so he could aim for them when peeing. Finally we offered a prize of a book if he would go potty. Lucca never did go in the potty on the floor--he was better off with the potty seat on the toilet--there's one that's convertable--the potty seat goes on the potty, and the base turns over to be little steps to help him get up. As always, let him watch Papa whenever possible, too, to see how it's done. Sounds like the strategy of getting your child to sit on the potty whenever to get used to it is backfiring a little--sounds like now he just wants to sit on the potty and doesn't realize he's supposed to go potty! A sticker chart might help too--everytime he sits and poops he gets a sticker.

Good luck!

F.,
I feel your potty pain!! I had a heck of a time with my 3 year old also. She was starting preschool this fall and I had to have her potty trained before she started. I went to a potty training program run by a lady in West Chicago. She's a pediatric nurse with 5 and the 6th one on the way (so she really knows her potty business). Her website is www.bootycampmom.com
I did it with my daughter and it took a week for her to be potty trained. It was completely not my style to do this - but when it comes to desperate times...well, we do what we need to do. Best $200 I've spent, honestly. We followed her advice to the T and got results. Now my daughter is happily a part of the preschool world. I know Ms. Sweeney is going on maternity leave soon (she was pretty pregnant when we were there this summer) so check it out. Good luck!

This is the same way I have seen it go for many children, it lasts about a week sometimes less. I feel like I spend about three days straight in the bathroom with each of my children. It is a new game but one well worth playing. I did do the timer thing I set it every 20-30 minutes and they would hear it and run to go potty then as the days went on I increased the time soon the timer wasn't used at all and we moved out of the bathroom. I did figure out that they all liked the one on one time. They each caught on that they had me all to themselves while they went or tried to go so we usually got alot of stories read. Just enjoy the time and relax in no time you to will move out of the bathroom. Until then everything else can wait.
Have a great day.
