Potty Training a Boy - Newark,OH

I used www.3daypottytraining.com with my daughter when she was 2 yrs 8 mos. It worked! She was potty trained in 3 days. You have to be patient...she didn't get it until around 5 pm on the third day, but after that, she was potty trained for day and night. There were a few night accidents when I forgot and gave her too much juice close to bedtime. My girlfriend used this program w/her son when he was about 2 1/2 and had success. She said it took him 5 days to stay dry at night. Good Luck!

Hi, A.! I have two boys who are 15 months apart, and I did the exact same thing for both of them. I would sit them on the potty before their bath at night, just to get them used to the toilet -- whether they peed or not, I still sat them there. We did that for a LONG time! Probably close to a year before we really started potty training. They were both 2 years and 10 months, and they were trained night and day within two days! I don't have any tricks, but they never peed at night! I told them that we didn't have any more diapers, and that we HAD to use big boy underwear. Of course, they were all printed up with characters on them, so the boys loved to wear them! We made it a point to hit the bathroom every hour, especially if they were drinking a lot. We used the thick underwear at night with plastic pants over top (of course, that was 12 years ago), and we never had a problem! They were trained SO FAST!! It was great! I really think sitting them on the potty before their bath for so long to get them used to it was the key. I've been doing the same with my 15 month old, and she's pooped four times on the potty! Hi A., your son will potty in the stool when he is ready BUT: maybe if you take his favorite color, buy nail polish and put a big circle in the stool and see if he can aim for that maybe that would be fun for him. The Dr. told us that when they are ready they will go, but if you get them mad it could be worse than peeing in his pants. Good Luck K. P<ha

What we did with our twin daughters at about 2.5 was bought a kitchen timer and started it at 30 minutes. The first time it rang, it startled the girls, but i said it was the potty clock. Every 30 minutes we went into the bathroom and sat on the potty - whether they had to go or not. We did this from the time they woke up til the time they went to bed for about two weeks. We also bought the huggies clean team soap (has a hippo head that lights up while they wash) and that "excited" them to go potty to get to use the soap. We then bought the huggies clean team wipes and call them the "poopy wipes" and the girls only got to use them if they went #2 on the potty. We still do the soap and the poopy wipes, but we eventually stopped using the potty clock. Of course we gave M&Ms or gummie bears at first too if they went potty, but that eventually stopped on its own. Good luck.

I have a 5 1/2 month old son and people have already been giving me advice on potty training him lol. Some friends of mine have sworn by things like putting cheerios, fruitloops, etc. in the toilet bowl to give a boy something to "aim" for, and also using a large metal coffee can and letting them go pee in that because the noise amuses them. Hopefully these ideas help......I'll be trying them in a few years myself.

You will have to talk to him about what to expect when he uses the toilet. He needs to be put on the potty when he gets up in the morning, about every hour during the day and immediately before bed. Running water lightly while at the toilet helps with the urge to go to the bathroom a lot. Turn it into fun time. Mine were younger but we played patty cake and other games and read short stories while they were on the potty. They were rewarded for using the potty instead of their pants. My sister-in-law used skittles with my nephew. I used fruit snacks, all in what you feel comfortable with. After about a month you can further explain he is a big boy now and only big boys are allowed to play with certain toys etc., then if he uses his diaper instead of the toilet he loses a big boy toy and has to use the toilet the next two times correctly to earn it back. This is time consuming for you and your husband because in about about two months he will be having to help him learn the art of standing to urinate, contests of who can go the fastest, etc.

my son is 2 1/2 years old too. i put him on the potty about every hour. you have to be pretty strict on this. once he gets that down you could try underpants. my son does great at this point but for bed and we put him in a diaper then.
i think it's really one of those things that just has to "click" for them. dragging him to the potty screaming, letting him pee in his pants, going with out pants, candy...etc. never worked for me. until he got it, nothing was really mattering to him. but boy when the light bulb goes off, how exciting!!

Every child is different and you'll have to figure out what works for your little one. My child couldn't have cared less about cheerios, star stickers, etc. What worked was just taking his diaper away completely and staying home for a week. He peed on the floor twice and in his underwear once and by the end of the week he was in underwear. It sounds easy but truly was a week from hell that I don't want to do over. I had to remain strong even when it would have been so easy to give the diapers back. Good luck! :-)

My son was a 2 yrs and 9 months when he trained. We talked about it, and he said that he really wanted to. Then we continued to discuss it for about a week while I got organized, and he was so excited.

I used the Potty Training in a Day method, and it worked like a charm! We used a non-wetting doll (Elmo) with a potty seat, and he sat on the living room floor all day. I put down a $3 shower curtain and blanket on the floor to avoid "spills". We played together most of the day. That very first day he made it to the potty 5 out of 8 times (2 of the 3 accidents were at the very beginning of the day).

I wouldn't say that he was trained within one day, but by day 3, he was totally daytime trained. I never even had to remind him to go, he just walked in the bathroom, pulled down his pants, and sat down.

I know some moms have good experiences with this method and others don't. I'm sure it doesn't work for everyone, but I do think you have a higher rate of success if you follow the whole program instead of picking and choosing and leaving out pieces. I found the book at the Clermont Co library. I'm sure Hamilton Co would have it too. I was willing to put in one solid day of concentrated potty work but not willing to have a daily hassle for days/weeks on end. Thankfully it worked well for us.
