This is my third child to PT. He is 3.5. He doesn't resist to sit on the potty. Very willing. But he is able to hold it for hours. He can hold it for 5-6 hours. Now I know that is a good thing that he can hold it. But I am afraid he will get an infection if he continues to do this. So here is my question. How do I get him to actually relax and release to go potty. I have done treats, books, games etc. Just no luck.
Thanks

What can I do next?

Some kids just have a strong bladder and can hold it longer. If he's not complaining of discomfort he's probably ok. I have twin 4 year olds, AJ and Eli. Eli has to pee before we leave the house, when we get there, and before we leave to come home. AJ will not pee before we leave, hold it the whole time we're out and still not go when we get back. But when AJ does go, watch out! You would think an adult is using the toilet, LOL :)

My daughter has a bladder of steel! She has always been able to hold it for long periods of time....she just doesn't have to go as often. She has also been nighttime trained since we started the process at a little over 2 years old. She can just hold it longer...I can't explain it. I wouldn't worry too much about it. Just try to set a timer and get him to try, but if he doesn't have to go, then he doesn't have to! Good luck!

The ability to hold pee for a long time has no relationship to bladder infections. My grandboy can hold his for hours, too.

I do urge him to go before we take a walk or take a nap. We've made up a game where I have to clear a bunch of dinosaurs out of the way to give him space and time to get to the potty. It's way fun and very dramatic, and he can't resist.

Give him more water? He can only hold so much and if you give him more to drink he'll go more. Stir in some cranberry juice if you think he needs it.

We got a Potty Watch from One Step Ahead for my 2 year old. It worked great. She had been hesitant to go to the potty, but when the watch would start it's little song she'd tell me it was time to try. We only had to use it for a little while before she got the idea.

We have the same issue with my youngest, I give him plenty of fluids and he goes on his own with no issue and is able to hold it all night long with no accidents. he has never had an accident at night.

Hope this helps.

Sometimes by running the water in the sink or the bath tub it will actually stimulate the sensation to go pee...have you tried that, while he is sitting on the potty?

Other than that I say don't worry too much about it...I have one who can hold it for hours as well...he is 6 and have had no infections thus far.

Have you tried having the doctor/nurse talk to him? Sometimes a 'professional' telling them will make a difference :) Just a thought! Good luck!

My son would do the same thing. We would get a cup and pour a little warm water on his pee pee so that he wouls atart to go.When he started going we would clap and cheer for him.He learned that was what he was supposed to do and started doing it on his own.We are still working on getting completly trained but he is almost there. Also running around the house with no clothes really helps then learn that feeling and they dont like it when they have an accident because not only can they feel it they can see it.Good luck patience is key
