Potty Learning/Training a "Heavy Wetter"

My just-turned-3-year-old darling boy still requires a change at around midnight or else he will wake in the morning soaked through. We've tried limiting his drink intake in the hour or so just before bed, but unless we just about dehydrate him, there's really no difference.
He's started going poop in the potty and peeing every now and then as well (especially when he's around his just-recently-out-of-diapers cousin), so we would really like to ramp up the whole potty learning experience. We're just unsure about how to help him stay dry through the night knowing he has always just been a really "heavy wetter." Any ideas short of waking him up to pee at night & bothering his sleep?

What can I do next?

We were given some great advice when we were tackling this same problem in late July. We only concentrated on the day potties first and the night honestly just fell into place. We didn't know how to tell him he could get out of bed and know that he would return to "his" bed and not climb into ours downstairs (his morning ritual). We were on vacation when he got up and went potty by himself one night.
Our doctor was actually VERY surprised when he was already potting at night (so I don't think that it usually happens this way)
Our little one seemed to just follow along. He would ALWAYS SOAK his diapers aswell and honestly it seemed to slow down as he reached potty training readiness :)

Hope this helps :)

You might try taking him to the Dr. It sounds like he might be a bed wetter. Hope this helps!

It sounds like he is probably going to wet the bed for a while. Bed Wetting does not mean he will not potty train. Some kids wet the bed way into elementary school and have no daytime accidents. Once he is fully potty trained during the day, you can make sure he empties his bladder right before he goes to sleep, then maybe he won't be so soaked. I wouldn't wake him up. I have 3 siblings that were bed wetters and the first one, poor guy, went through all kinds of torture (being awakened at night, pee alarms) before my mom just realized it's normal and he'll eventually grow out of it.
If Pull-ups get too expensive, you might want to consider a re-usable overnight diaper.

My 3 year old daughter just potty trained about 4 months ago. And I tell you what I always had trouble keeping her dry at night because she pees soo much. Almost as much as me. She still is in diapers at night. But I notice that sometimes she doesn't get wet at all. What I do I immidiately take her to the bathroom when she wakes up. Sometimes she herself goes to the bathroom and takes her diaper off. It just takes a little time. Don't worry. At this moment your son is just getting there. You will start to notice some changes soon. Also I try to give her milk or water like 30 to 40 minutes before bedtime. She is a milk addict. ha,ha,ha. She still cannot go to sleep without her milk. Anyways, this helps. That way it gives her a little time before bedtime to go to the bathroom. Just have patience. I would recommend to go to the doctor when he is older like 4 or even 4 1/2. There is also a natural way to help his little bladder function properly if he doesn't get better. If you have any questions just reply.
