Possible Woodchip in Son's Nose

Hey Mamas,
So I had my son out at a playground today that has those little woodchips all over, sort of like what you would put in your flowerbed or around bushes etc. Anyway, my husband went to get him off the playland and saw a small piece of a woodchip just inside his nostril. He tried to get it but my son, who is 3.5, sucked it in quickly. My husband said it was small, I got my son and had him blow his nose and small piece came out. I showed my hubby and he said he thinks it might have been a little bigger but he is not sure. So my question is, how big of a deal is this? If there is something up there, is that a problem, or will it work it's way out on it's own. Is it a choking risk? I mean, it couldn't be large, if there is anything up there and he isn't in any pain. Should I get him checked out, or just assume he is fine?

What can I do next?

The only thing I could possibly suggest is to put some saline inside, have him blow again and see how much residue comes out.

haha. Dont worry J., he'll sneeze anything extra out. My cousin put a dry bean in his nose when he was about 4. No one knew it was there till he had a weird aroma coming from his face, can you imagine that? Oy.
Doc got it out of course with a little pair of forcepts, but geez, really?

I am not sure in regards to your question on choking risk and other issues but I do know that I no longer allow my child to play in those kids of parks due to the chemicals used to treat those wood chips. They are not good for your kids.

Does your pediatrician have a nurse to triage phone calls? I always call and ask if I am questioning something.

My coworkers little boy got a sticker burr caught in his nose awhile back. The only reason she knew was because she could smell a very foul odor coming from what seemed to be his face. She took him to the doctor and lo and behold, there was the sticker burr.

The Christmas before last my DD had a slight cold. After about a half a day, she grew alarmingly grumpy. As the snot trickled down her precious, button face...her snot was red in color. "My goodness!!!" I exclaimed!!! I sat down on the floor while she stood to try and look up her nose....it looked like a blood clot....she was irritable...miserable...crying....I was sooooo scared. I took a Kleenex, cupped it up on her nostril...slightly "pulled" down while the "object"...or should I say "life threatening" blood clot came out....

.....it was a piece of a red crayon.

I feel your pain!!!!

The use of a saline always has my kids sneezing use that if nothing comes out just watch him the next few days if he complains that it hurts bloody nose or looks swollen of course it's time to get him checked out.
