Hi - this is a two part question. We are going to be doing some traveling soon with our 11 month old and thought about purchasing a portable DVD player just in case we need it on the plane. Does anyone have any DVD players they love that are not going to break the bank?

Also, we will be going to NYC when our daughter is about 16 months and we are not quite sure how to handle taxi cabs with her...do we bring a car seat? I can only imagine New Yorkers have to deal with this all the time with little ones....but wondering if anyone had any ideas or has done NY with a toddler?

Thank you for your help with any or all!

What can I do next?

If you don't want to buy a DVD player for the plane you can rent one at the airport when you take off and return it when you land. I do that every time we fly. The cost is very reasonable and I would highly recommend it.

Also, in NYC you will most likely be walking. As far as cabs go I guess you would have to take the car seat in and out. I've never thought about it.

Good luck.

We got one of those dvd players for our 2 year old for the plane and it's the best thing we have ever done. If you keep your eyes on the sale ads they go on sale all of the time.

I know the last time we took a cab that the cabbie wasn't going to let us go with him if we didn't have a car seat. But it wasn't New York.

I hope you guys have a good time.

In response to question #1 - I think that at 11mo old, investing in a portable DVD player for her is probably not worth it. TV isn't going to hold her attention more than 5 minutes, but the DVD player will, and chances are it will be crashing to the floor with regularity. If you want one for yourself and your husband, there are several out there now at good prices. Another option if you your husband likes games is the PSP. It has amazing quality for movies and you can play games, listen to music, etc. for around $250. There are also some good multimedia players out there like the one from Creative.

We got our portable DVD player at Target. It was a brand I'd never heard of, but it was only $180. One year later, we still have never had any problems w/ it and we use it all of the time. It was a godsend when we got stuck on a layover!

I haven't done NY with my 2 year old, but I have done a lot of travelling and more than a few cab rides. I've never needed her carseat for a cab ride. There shouldn't be a problem as long as the baby is being held in your lap. We have a Panasonic DVD player for my daughter. You can get it at Sam's club for about $200. You can find cheaper one's at Walmart. Also make sure to find headphones for the baby, because she won't be able to hear anything on the plane. Even with the volume full throttle, we couldn't. I suggest the earphones that actually attach to each ear. Those were the only ones my daughter kept on.

Here is the carseat/stroller combo that we have used for travelling.

(If the link does not work for some reason, it is called a "sit n stroll")
