Okay, ladies! I am in desperate need of some advice. My 2 1/2 year old potty trained really quick over the summer and he does not have any accidents when he wants to pee but we can not seem to get him to poop in the potty. He even cries when he does poop in his underware and knows and tells us that he has pooped, but can not seem to catch it in time. (literally) We are constantly asking him if he has to go and we take him to the potty regularly and still no luck. If you have nay advice please send them my way... Thanks!

What can I do next?

So What Happened?

Thanks ladies for all your advice. As I said in the previous request I am all for any suggestions. So, yesterday he completely through me off and walked into the bathroom got on the potty and pooped and of course we made a big deal about it and called everyone we could possibly think because he was so excited! But later that night he had an accident in his underware, so I off in the morning to get some "tresure box" items and see if that works. Thanks ladies for all your advice, have a great weekend!

All I can say is... my older daughter was exactly the same. She was trained for months, but would ask for or go grab a pull-up on her own to poop. The first time she did it in the potty - this is what I heard "it didn't splash me. it didn't hurt. it wasn't too loud" ~ she had all those fears. I laughed so hard (not in front of her) but that is why she had so much trouble. Maybe talk to him about it - maybe he has some fears - irrational or not.
Good luck!

The way I trained all three of mine was to create a "treasure box" and fill it with dollar store stickers, toys, etc. Whenever they went potty they would get something out of the box. My son was trained by 22 months, daughter by 15 months and youngest daughter by 18 months due to the treasure box. Make a big deal of it when he goes, maybe even sing a song like the one my friend sings her daughter, ("his name" is going poo poo and pee pee on the potty, she sings that line over and over while clapping her hands for her...it works). Also, if he has an accident I know how frustrating it is but just remember he is a little person and tell him you understand, but show hin the "box" and tell him no due to the accident.

We had the exact same problem with our son at the same age; he would stay dry in underwear and pee in the potty without a problem. However whenever it was time to poop, he would ask to switch to a pull-up and go to his room (usually his bed) and poop in the pull-up. One day I told him I had a "magic pull-up." What made it "magic" was that I had taken some scissors and pre-cut a large hole in the back of the pull-up. I put it on him then sat him on the potty and for the first time...success! He was still crying during the whole episode, but he was so proud of himself (I praised him, and we called dad and g-parents from the potty) that he pooped on the potty from that day forward. I think he had been scared of a big splash, or just the unknown in general. Maybe the "magic pull-up" can work for you too! Good luck! :-)

M.,

does he seem to have "hard" stools in his underwear? Or does he cry, grunt, or make "faces" when he is "pooping"? He might need a stool softener to make it just a little easier for him to go..We're actually having the opposite problem with our 2 1/2 year old son. He's more ready to go to his potty when he does need to poop than just pee, and most of the time he's upset with me when we don't make it in time, but I don't make a big deal about it, yet. Sometimes, they do have a harder time grasping the concept of needing to "go" before they're 3, so he's young yet. (btw...don't you just LOVE the Tough & Tender Wipes for cleaning his potty??? I've been known to order 3 pantry packs at a time for our house!!)

My son potty trained quick with pee pee too, but took a bit longer for the other. We rewarded him with his favorite candy, an m&m. It took allot of talking, but when he finally did it in the potty for the first time, we made a VERY big deal and even gave him a few m&Ms, but only one for the next several times after and then it just was not thought about any longer. Good Luck!
