Looking for answers to the breastfed baby. My baby goes days with no poop, then a HUGE blowout. Has anyone experienced this? This is my second baby, the first one is only one and he wasn't like this at all.

What can I do next?

My doc said that was completely normal.5-7 days, they might go with out pooping. It happened to me,on the 5th day she pooped. The reason is because they are absorbing so much and that is a good thing! My friend breast feeds and her little baby poops everyday!I think it just depends on the kid.

Hi D.

My Daughter has had this problem since birth. I went to alot of different Dr.'s to see what options I had. Most of them said to change her formula to soy. But my Cousin said don't cause their poop smells really bad and it didn't help her. So I decided to try the poop drops and she had a belly ack most of the time and cried alot. One Dr. said to give her a spoon of Mineral Oil and another said Olive Oil. I tried both and the Olive Oil was the best one and it's natural so it's healthier. Make sure she drinks alot of water too and rubbing her tummy helped a lil. If she gets really constipated you can try pushing her legs back while they are trying to get it out. I know it doesn't sound fun but we didn't it. Once your child is older you can smash up in a food processor Broccoli and other stuff high in fiber. We only have this problem now when she stays at her Grandma's house cause her grandpa doesn't listen to me when I stress the important of staying away from junk food and eating stuff high in fiber! One Dr. said it could be stress from going to one house to another.

I hope this helps cause it took me forever to seek someone to help me after all I think we saw like 15 different Dr.'s since it was horrible to see our first child with this problem and the crying was a nightmare!

Merry Christmas to you and your Family,
M. B.

Hi D.,

I'm always stressed about my son's poop, too! My doctor told me when he was an infant that if he goes longer than a week, then to call him. But as I recall, my son's poop habits are pretty ever-changing. I try not to worry anymore unless he seems to have discomfort.

Good luck,
M.

Your baby isn't getting enough fats in their diet. If you are breastfeeding you can take a shot of flax seed oil and it will go into your breast milk. If you are using formula you could start putting flax seed oil in their bottles. It is also good for brain and eye development a well as all the good intestinal stuff.

Flax seed oil can be bough tat vitamin stores or health food stores. It has to be refrigerated after opening.

Good luck!!

Amy

When my baby was around 2 mos old, he was pooping like every 4-5 days and would have a really huge one too. We were really concerned at first too. The pediatrician said that it is normal for breastfed babies because they absorb all the nutrients from breastmilk and don't need to poop every day. As long as the poop looks soft, then he should be fine.

My baby did this until he started taking solids. Doctor says it is normal.

My baby went thru lots of poop stages and that was one of them. I Was worried he was constipated. I tried drinking more water myself - that seemed to help a little. The doctor said not to worry, and the stage did pass, she said sometimes they use up all your milk with growing, but then I didn't understand why the blowout after a couple days.

I breastfed all my kids and my second one stressed me out because she would go for days without a poop, then this massive blowout. She even went almost a week one time! The doctor reassured me this was totally normal for breasfed babies, and he was right. She didn't start "normal" poop intervals until solids were introduced, Hang in there, hope I helped.

try cutting dairy out of your diet. My second baby went days without pooping and as soon as I stopped dairy he began pooping again regularly. I tried several times, but he just did not seem to tolerate it through my breastmilk. It was worth it, though, to have him pooping regularly.

This happened to my son when he was really little too. In fact, I remained close friends with my childbirth class moms and they all had that problem too around the same age. My Dr. said it was normal for some infant to go 5-7 days with no poops. Just keep breastfeeding and massaging the tummy, if it goes over 7 days, you might need to do some stimulation around the rectum. Gross I know, but you do want to see your little one suffer.

Normal for a breast fed baby is anywhere from once every 10 days to 10 times per day. As long as the stool is soft, you have nothing to worry about. Just carry a change of clothes with you wherever you go and realize that this is just one of many stages your baby will go through.

I just took my six month old to the doc for the same thing. He told me babies can go up to a week before I should worry, and only to worry if he is acting uncomfortable. He also suggested helping him go. (My daughters NICU nureses told me this too) Take a thermometer wet the tip with water or KY and stick it up only like 1/2 an inch and it will force them to push. I did it once after 3 days and he didnt seem to mind. I know it sounds invasive but if it helps the discomfort. Hope this helps

Hi D.,
My daughter (now 15 months) had that same poop habit for her first several months. She was solely breast fed and gained weight just fine, but would poop only once every 5 to 6 days. She went a week once and it freaked me out. She was the blowout queen too. It stressed me out but my pediatrician said it just means she was absorbing every nutrient she could get from her food. At around 6 months (when I introduced solids) her pooping became more normal and now, every morning she does her thing.

As long as your baby is not screaming and crying in pain, then I wouldn't worry too much. Some babies don't go poop every day, some go every 3-4 days or even longer. Poop is just waste so when babies go through growth spurts they use up more of their food and don't make as much waste so it takes a few days before they have enough to poop out. If you are still concerned then speak with your son's doctor or nurse. Good luck!!

My third child was solely breast fed and he did the same thing. My doc said that it is common for breast fed babies to sometimes save up their poop for up to a week. My son had a knack for going and going and going when we were out somewhere. I learned to keep a change of clothes, socks, and lots of wipes. When I started him on solids at about five or six months on cereal this got better. I can't count how many times I had to strip down his car seat and wash the whole cover. He seemed to like pooping once I had him in the car seat, ready to go somewhere. LOL. He's 9 now and doing fine but is lactose intolerant.

Hi,
I had the same experience with 2 of my children. If I remember right, one of them once went 11 days! Typically, though, it was more like 5 or 6 days. I would mention it to your ped, mostly just to ease your worries. And just in case there is something else going on. I was told that it is because most of breastmilk is able to be digested and used by the body. There just isn't as much waste.

Have fun with your 2 little ones.

Because you're nursing, you need to make sure your diet is good. The flax seed oil that was suggested is a good idea for you but not for your baby. Your child is not ready for flax seed oil. Babies can't digest it yet. I think you have to wait until your child is at least two for flax seed oil but you should definitely include it in your diet. You can also eat avocados and make sure you're getting enough water. Hope this helps.
