My 4 Month Old Breastfed Son Hasn't Gone #2 in Three Days, What Can I Do?

My 4 month old breastfed son normally does # 2 about 2 or 3 times a day. I know this gets less and less as they get older but, he all of a sudden just stopped going. We did go out of town but he seemed fine there and stopped pooping the day after we got home. Could I be lacking something in my diet? He has been farting a lot and they are VERY stinky! He seems to be acting normal, although his sleeping has been a little different (not taking very long naps anymore) but that could just be his age. I know it always changes. I have tried messaging his tummy and lower back, pushing up on his legs, and even tried putting the thermometer is his back side to stimulate, but nothing seems to be working. Any idea's?? Do I need to take him to the doctors?

Thanks in advance for any advice.

It was definitely the change of diet! Eat lots of "P" foods, pears. peas. prunes, also apples, these are high in fiber. As soon as his body is done digesting the food, it will come out. It is putrefied and therefore stinky...poor thing. If I eat white rice my baby gets constipated too. He will go soon and be okay.
Best of luck and relax :)

I bet he poops soon...just if you're out, bring lots of wipes and spare clothes with you...it's likely to be a messy one! If he's not acting uncomfortably, he's probably fine.

Good luck!

docs say 1-12 days is normal, yeah they'll be uncomfortable, but it will happen naturally

My son went through this as well. My dr. recommended putting a small amount of prune juice in his bottle of breastmilk. We called it his chocolate milk. It worked great.

I have a 5 month old little boy and we went through this too! Actually he still only goes #2 about once a week. I called my ped. and she said that because breast milk is so perfect and has everything that the baby needs he is probably just using all the nutrients and has nothing left to depose of :) She said he would be fine even going for 2 weeks without going #2! If you are still worried I would just give your doc a call to get some professional reassurance :) He will eventually go and when he does boy watch out it is an explosion! We call every tue or wed D-Day because we know that is usually when he will have a blow-out in his clothes...that may be to much info but its true :) Good luck!

Totally normal, if a little scary. If it lasts over a week, call your doctor and give them a headsup, but it's normal.

Good luck

Listen to Karla and Riley - do not be putting anything into your baby at this time:o) Call the pediatrician if you have concerns and know that breastfed is BEST and this is probably normal, very normal.

On another note, here are some suggestions for doing the research for yourself to decide what is best for you and your baby on vaccines. The vaccine schedule as it is now is too many, too soon, and you could see your perfect baby develop many problems if you don't do the research. Here are some books that I recommend:

Healing the New Childhood Epidemics: Autism, ADHD, Asthma, and Allergies: The Groundbreaking Program for the 4-A Disorders, by Dr. Kenneth Bock

The Vaccine Book, by Dr. Robert Sears

What Your Doctor May Not Tell You About Childhood Vaccinations, by Dr. Stephanie Cave

Evidence of Harm, by David Kirby

Your infant does not need up to 48 shots before he enters kindergarten and up to 24 of them before the age of two.

Congrats on your new baby! My 3 month old has just started not pooping for a long time too. The problem is, all of a sudden she has terrible gas that is interrupting her sleep! It's making her feel so uncomfortable, plus she's not getting the sleep she needs now. So, I would like to get her pooping more regularly for that reason. I wonder if your son is experiencing any of that?

That happened to our 4-month-old breastfed twins, too. I was told it's normal and not much of a concern if it doesn't happen after 7 days but for the most part, they should normally go within that time frame. I also would like to believe that as breastfed babies, they are probably absorbing more of the breast milk and not letting it go to "waste" like with formula-fed babies, who probably have more bowel movements in a day since most of what is consumed probably does go to waste. Happened to one of our babies, she didn't go for 3 days and by day 4-5, she finally had a bowel movement. So wait it out and see if he'll go in the next day or so and I would contact the pediatrician if you don't see anything after day 7. Hope everything turns out okay! :)

Hi M., your son is only 4 months old, so I would use caution in any of the mentioned remedies. In my experience, it was common for a BM to only take place once a week and sometimes longer, during our breast feeding times. Check with your PED.

Best of luck.

My daughter used to do this, too! She is exclusively breastfed and she used to go almost a week without pooping when she was around 2-4 months. I think that it is completely normal and nothing to be worried about.

it's totally normal for breastfed infants to go up to 10 days w/o a BM. Our milk is so perfect for them, so easily digestible that the often use ALL of what goes in. I usually just say mine is growing a little more when she goes as much as 8 days w/o one. Beware when it does come: there might be a bit of a consistency change. When my little girl started going 4-8 days between BMs the seedy mustard stools turned to more of a peanut butter texture. And very stinky... but not as bad as formula poos! Just keep feeding and everything will be fine. Exclusively BF babies generally don't get constipated because breast milk is a natural laxative.

My 4-month old formula-fed foster baby had this problem for two days and the Dr. recommended one-ounce of prune juice. It worked!

Hope that your problem already resolved.

But I am happy to share my knowledge.I used glycerin suppositories when my son had the same problem. It helped very well. There is one for children or it could be regular size (use about 1/4 for infant - cut suppository along not across ).

All the best 8-)

Totally normal. My son stopped pooping regularly at that age, too. He went five days once, if I remember correctly. Our ped told us it is totally normal for breastfed babies. He's getting nothing but good stuff from you and his body is using most of it which in turn does not produce a lot of waste. She did say if it went a week, we could give him a baby suppository, but use caution as you don't want him to start relying on it to poop. I'd call your doctor if you're truly worried, but I'm pretty sure you're going to be told not to worry.

Totally normal! My youngest went over a week without pooping when he was about the same age (I breastfed as well)My doc says this is normal. As long as eveything else about him seems fine, just think of this as a mini vacation from poop duty. Check with your doc if it'll make you feel better. Congrats on your new wee one!

Whenever you feel concerned about a.n.y.t.h.i.n.g. of COURSE :) call up your ped. Calling is the great middle ground, because you can talk to a nurse, and decide with them whether or not to come in. The phonecalls are always free.

Just fyi, though, many exclusively breastfed babies only go #2 once or twice a week. Some go for as long as 9 or 10 days, while others go after every meal.
