One of my childhood memories is my mom trying to get silly putty out of the carpet using ice cubes and chipping away at it with a butter knife. It must have worked because I don't remember being in big trouble. Maybe it's worth a shot...

A couple of solutions below. Good luck!

Important - Always read and follow the care instructions and any warnings provided by the carpet manufacturer. Rugs and carpets with natural fibers and/or certain dyes may require special treatment. If in doubt contact a cleaning professional for advice/service. Also follow these General Rules for stain treatment.

Remove as much of the foreign material as possible by blotting with a white paper towel or scraping with a dull knife.

Apply isopropyl rubbing alcohol to a clean white cloth, white paper towel or cotton ball. If the spot extends deep into the pile use a blotting motion until the spot is removed or no color is transferred to the cloth. Do not allow the alcohol to penetrate into the backing as this will destroy the latex bond. If the spot is on the surface only, rub in one direction at a time. Never us a circular motion to remove spot as this may destroy the texture. Stop if spot is removed. If not, go to the next step.

Apply a small quantity of detergent solution to the spot. (To make the detergent solution mix 1/4 teaspoon of a hand dish washing detergent which does not contain lanolin or bleach with 1 quart of water; examples of safe detergents are Dawn® and Joy®.) Use a blotting motion to work the detergent into the affected area. If spot is being removed continue applying detergent and blotting with a white paper towel until spot is removed.

Rinse with tap water using a spray bottle, blot to remove excess moisture.

Spray lightly with water, do not blot this time; apply pad of paper towels and brick and allow to dry.

If there is still some stain on the carpet and blotting is not removing it, then moisten the tufts in the stained area with 3% hydrogen peroxide. Let stand for on (1) hour. Blot and repeat until carpet is stain free. Light will cause peroxide to change back to water so no rinsing is necessary. Apply pad of paper towels and weight down with brick.

How do I remove PLAY-DOH compound from carpet, upholstery or fabric?

When attempting to remove PLAY-DOH compound do NOT use hot water or cleaning solutions of any kind.

To remove PLAY-DOH compound from carpet or fabrics, allow it to dry completely, and then loosen with a stiff brush. It may be necessary to vacuum clean or wash with gentle soap and cold water.

You may need to repeat the process in order to completely remove the PLAY-DOH compound.

Okay I don't have a solution but my friend just sent me this in an e-mail. Read the fourth line :)

I couldn't help but laugh when I read your post. I came here to read the answers to see if someone has come up with something better than what I have.....Turns out no. I concur, DON'tT GET IT WET. It appears the best solution is the one I use. Let it dry and then scrape. If you have a very good vacuum, it will pull it out when it is dry. I have also discovered that IKEA has great prices on area rugs.

Try diaper wipes or wet ones

This might sound crazy, but it works. Try using mayonaise...it has to be real mayonaise too. Take it in your hand, and rub the mayo on the playdoh on the carpet and it should loosen it all up within 20-30 seconds...then, just wash the carpet with soap and water to lift up the mayo and playdoh.

I haven't tried it with play-doh, but I have used it to remove tree-sap from the carpet, and also from my dog's paw-pads. It was amazing how easily the mayo lifted the sap from both the carpet and the dog's feet. Now I always suggest mayonaise!

Give it a try and good luck.

Hi C.,

I feel your pain!!! Whatever you do, don't get it wet, it will make things so much worse. Hopefully, you got all that you could out of the carpet at the time of impact. Once it's good and dry, take a plastic scraper of some sort (I use the little brown square scrapers that come with Pampered Chef Stoneware)and "pick" at the play doh. It's tedious, but the scraping breaks up the mess. You should be able to remove fairly good sized chunks by scraping at it, then running the vacuum over the area several times. This process may need to be repeated, but it has always worked for me. Good Luck!
