My 5-year-old wants a bike, but our neighborhood is not safe for bike riding. Are there any good places in Dallas to take kids to ride bikes?

What can I do next?

What fun!! White Rock Lake and the Katy trail both have trails that are off of the roads, but they can be very crowded, which can be intimidating for a new rider (even adults!). The west side of White Rock around the TP Hill area is probably the easiest place at the lake. The hard-core cyclists use the road there, and the trail is a nice surface. You'll run into construction about a mile from TP Hill, but that may be as far as you need to go for a while! Good luck and don't forget helmets - they're required for all ages in Dallas and the police have been writing tickets at both locations!

Depends on what part of Dallas you are in. Most neighborhood parks have a sidewalk around them you can ride on. White Rock Lake is great. Fair Park is a wonderful place to ride. If there is not an event going on, it is perfect! The Katy Trail is filled with all ages, biking and walking. There are several metroplex groups devoted to family rides each weekend.
You can google biking in Dallas or call one of the bike stores to find out about these programs.
I bike with my son almost every day. It's a great way to keep ME in shape!
Have fun!

Hi L.:
Andrew Brown park in Coppell is wonderful. The park itself is divided into two sections (East and West) but are connected. It's very large and offers sidewalks around the entire park, as well as sidewalks along canals in the neighborhood. The park also has Kid Kountry, a great big wooden play structure AND the aquatic center with 4 pools outside and 2 inside. It would be well worth your family's time and effort to make a trip!

Have you tried the elementary or middle school parking lots near you. You would have to go with the child, and sometimes the lots are very busy. My children always loved to go there and ride around. I husband and I had our own bikes at the time and we would go with them. I live near McDonald Middle School and that lot was great to ride around in.

Its been a few years (my youngest is 31) but I would think that it is still OK.

Lindsley Park in East Dallas has a nice big sidewalk that circles the park (and then you can play at the park!).
