I love pineapple, but whenever I eat it, I get a sore, burning, raw feeling in my mouth. So, I googled pineapples and mouth sores and came across a few different articles that explained that pineapples have an enzyme that breaks down tissue causing mouth sores and inflammation in some people. It is not an allergic reaction. Here is the link to one of the articles that I read
http://www.livestrong.com/article/457760-pineapple-juice-...

Have any of you or your kids experienced this reaction from eating pineapple?

What can I do next?

So What Happened?

Aileene, I am not sure what you are trying to say. By doping do you mean smoking pot or taking drugs? Livestrong was just one of the resources I found. I posted that link because it was an easy article to read.

If the info came from livestrong - aren't you worried their pineapples are doping?

I was joking. Lance Armstrong - doping with steroids. Livestrong (his foundation)....so maybe all their test pineapples were on 'roids? :)

I was just being funny. Well I laughed anyway. :)

Yes, the skin in my mouth sloughs off whenever I eat pineapple, however I then have the best BMS ever. Which means, it's probably sloughing of cells in my GI tracts as well...Oh well.

I also have this problem with Honeydew Melon. My son has it with raw tomatoes. Spaghetti type sauces are OK though.

I get that if I eat too much pineapple or drink too much orange juice. It's all very acidic. Doesn't stop me though. I know some people sprinkle a little salt on the pineapple to help stop that reaction. Perhaps that will work for you ...

Yes. The only thing I've found to treat it is to mix equal parts of benadryl and either pepto bismol or mylanta and hold it in your mouth on the sores...swish it around for as long as you can, then spit it out. It usually works pretty quickly.

But fresh pineapple is so, so, so good!

My oldest son gets them from pineapples too. I just have to make sure he doesn't overdo it when he has a serving, and that I don't give it to him too many days a week.

When I was a kid I would get canker sores from too many bananas.

ETA: Livestrong is the foundation associated with Lance Armstrong; since he got in trouble for taking steroids to enhance his performance (aka, doping), Aileen was just making a joke.

I don't get mouth sores, but it makes my tongue feel like my taste buds get irritated and swollen and leaves a really bad taste in my mouth. I've noticed that it lessens the longer the pineapple's been cut. So I cut it and wait a day or two before I eat it.

Yes, I and my daughter get a raw feel from fresh pineapple when we eat too much of it. But when you have a really good one, it is hard to stop. Pineapple is very acidic. If we have just a little bit we have no problem.
