I have a two-year-old son and am wondering when he should start using a pillow. So far he sleeps good without a pillow.

What can I do next?

So What Happened?

Thanks everyone. Since he does not seem needing one, I decided to wait until he moves into his toddler bed. Thanks again for all the advised: it was very helpful!

I can't remember the exact age I gave my son a pillow, but I know it was after his 1st birthday. I got one of the little travel pillows from Walmart, and he still uses it to this day. He also has a standard size pillow, now that he's 4, and we use the travel pillow for when we go on trips.

My son was about 12 months and he would not sleep threw the night. Then i gave him my husbands pillow one night in his crib and he has been sleeping with it just fine. But I say if he is ok with out one then let it be.

My son is 15 months old and has been sleeping with a pillow since he was 12 months old. I asked my Ped at his 1 year checkup about the pillow before I did it because I was having trouble getting him to sleep by himself and the doctor said he was old enough and once I put it in his bed he has slept so much better. However if your son is sleeping good without one, why bother right now. Maybe if you haven't switched him to a toddler bed already, when you do switch you could introduce a pillow then.

I say leave well enough alone. If he is sleeping well with out one...I wouldn't even worry about it.

If you're afraid he'll smother, use a small square throw pillow like the ones you put on a sofa to start out with. The kind that are quite firm and when laid on your hand doesn't sag off the sides. My son started using a travel pillow when he was 2 and since he was 2, he was already used to not sleeping with a pillow, so now that he's 7, he still pushes it to the side when he gets in bed or uses his arm.

MY DAUGHTER USES A FLAT PILLOW AND SHE WILL BE TWO AT THE END OF JAN. SHE HAD IT SINCE ABOUT 18 MONTHS OLD. I WOULDN'T GIVE HIM A BIG FLUFFY ONE BUT A LITTLE FLAT I CAN't SEE HURTING HIM.

I don't think there is ever an age you "should" start using a pillow. I think it's okay any time after a child turns one year old. I gave my three daughters (ages 6,4 and 2 years)pillows when they moved to big girl beds. Most of the time they don't sleep on them. They may start out on them at bed time but, when I check on them most of the time they have moved down off of their pillows. It won't hurt to give your child a pillow. He'll ultimately decide if he wants to use it or not.

You can start him now with a pillow if you want. If they're used to not having one, then that's okay, but he should really get used to having one especially if he's in a toddler bed or by the time he's 3, since the head will actually be a separate entity from the neck, and will need support. Start putting one in the bed with him now so he'll get used to it, and then he'll most likely start to sleep on it. My son is only 17 months old, but he's been sleeping with a pillow ever since he turned 1. He loves it now, but doesn't always have to have it. Hope this helps!

my son is 2 and he has slept on a nice fluffy pillow since one, he loves his pillow, but he doesn't always sleep on it, i find him sleeping on blankets at the bottom of the bed..kids let us know when they need things, it is really up to your son..try it, if he likes it, then ok, if not ok too..

My children have slept on a small pillow since the day we came home from the hospital. A lot of people worry about babies smoethering in the pillowcase, so u can always stich a few snaps onto the end of the pillowcase & snap it shut that way children can't slip the case off the pillow and onto their heads.

If he sleeps well without one, then don't worry about it. Eventually he'll either want one or never use one. You can always give him one and see what he does with it.

When it comes to sleeping habits of chilcren, I always say, why mess with something if it is working. Is he still in a crib? You can introduce pillow when he moves to a toddler bed? That is what we plan to do. We have used pillows when our baby was sick,,,coughing...to elevate her head, and she moves them away and does not end up using them anyway :-) Best of luck.
