Hi moms!
I know there are a lot of questions about picky eaters that have already been posted, but my daughter is a picky eater AND has a severe milk and egg allergy. She does not like to try new foods at all partly because she is nervous I think. She is always asking if everything has milk in it ,even fruit! She knows what happens when she drinks milk (hives, stomach upset, gagging) because we have had a couple accidental episodes where she was given food that had milk in it by a friend. Does anyone have any recipes for me to try that do not contain milk or eggs? I hate to admit it but she lives on apples, almond butter and jelly sandwiches, grapes, bananas, chicken nuggets, oatmeal, pears, and a few other things. She needs more veggies in her diet but wont try them!

What can I do next?

There is a great cookbook called "What's to Eat? The Milk Free Egg Free Nut Free Allergy Cookbook" by Linda Marienhoff Cross. http://www.amazon.com/Milk-Free-Egg-Free-Nut-Free-Allergy... There is even a sequel called "What Else is to Eat?"

It has good recipes for meals, appetizers, snacks, baked goods, etc. I make stuff from it all the time for my son (especially baked goods).

Many (but not all) Panko bread crumbs are safe, so you could try breading chicken with those and having a healthier alternative to chicken nuggets. My son will eat most veggies if I put soy or teriyaki sauce on them. He also eats all beef products (hamburger, beef stew, steak, etc).

He asks all the time "is it dairy or soy?" even for things that are neither, like fruit, because he recently had an accidental dairy exposure too. Just reassure you daughter that you will NEVER give her milk or eggs. Maybe if you have her help you cook, she'll see what ingredients go in and will feel more comfortable eating the food because she'll know it's safe.

Oh, and another way to get veggies - bake things like zucchini bread, carrot bread, etc and she'll get some extra servings that way.

My daughter is 5 yrs old was diagnosed around 9 months w/a dairy allergy & then at 2 yrs old w/an egg allergy so we are dealing w/dairy & egg allergies still...anyway, I make a marinade w/apricot jelly & zesty italian dressing I season the chicken/pork chops with a little sea salt & cracked black pepper & bake in the oven at 350. Another good marinade is balasmic vinegar & olive oil about 1-2 tablespoons brown sugar, sea salt, & cracked black pepper. For a teriyaki marinade I use about a 1/4 cup of kikkoman soy sauce, 1/4 water (subsitute orange juice or pineapple juice even apple juice), 1-2 tablespoons of brown sugar & honey. BTW these are all great on the grill in the summer time; I hate using my stove in the summer. I have tons more if you want to contact me please feel free. I got my daughter to eat veggies by drizzling them w/olive oil a little sea salt then roasting them in the oven this can be done w/most any veggies (asparagus, cauliflower, broccoli, squash & zuchinni) are some of my daughter’s favs this way also I’ve done buttered squash & she loves that
For butter I used Fleischmann's unsalted margarine make sure that it's the Fleischmann's that is unsalted as the other one does have dairy.
oops I also forgot to mention for breadcrumbs I buy an off brand bag of Rice Krispies cereal (if found this was cheaper than the "shake n bake") you can crunch them up in a ziploc bag or put it in a food processor/chopper. I season the crumbs with a little paprika, sea salt & cracked black pepper you can do garlic salt or whatever season you like. This is great for baking or stove top frying.
Sorry I know this is a long post; so feel free to email me for more ideas ____@____.com this helps.

Sounds like she's eating fairly healthy, but definitely needs some more veggies! I've found it to be true that if the child helps make the food- they'll eat it!!! My daughter loves asparagus...a little olive oil and some garlic are all we add to it (it's REALLY good on the grill!). Can she have tofu? My daughter eats it (she a year old) plain, or I just boil it in some chicken stock.

I think the more foods she eats, the better she'll know what she can/cannot have, and won't be so afraid to eat new things! My nephew had a sever milk allergy as a toddler and my sister drew him pictures of all the foods he could eat safely and stuck them to the fridge. He had more freedom then to get himself a snack when he needed one!

Good luck!

Hi M.,

My son is allergic to milk, eggs, and nuts (and we're vegetarian), so there's a lot that he can't eat, but he is also picky on top of that! I got so frustrated that I actually wrote a cookbook and a blog with a dietitian that is free of all the common allergens (and gluten-free and vegan). We have great recipes for cookies, muffins, entrees and more that would all be safe and yummy for your daughter. The address for our blog is www.welcomingkitchen.blogspot.com.

Good luck!
