Period Question - What Do You Think?

Let me preface this by saying I probably should call my doctor (and still will) but just wanted to know what you mamas think of this.

My period resumed after stopping breastfeeding my son six months ago and I've had it like clockwork every 28 days. I'm on the pill (was while breastfeeding albeit a lower dosage one). I was midway through my cycle last Saturday when I started (about 2 weeks early). I had missed a pill on that previous Thurs so doubled up on Friday, which I have done in the past and never started my period.

The first few days it was very light flow but very dark in color. It's gotten more red since and I'm still on my period - six days later. I've never had a period for longer than 4-5 days! So of course I'm thinking I was maybe pregnant and then had a miscarriage, or maybe it was just the pill messing me up.

Any ideas? Have you had this happen? I know periods are not very reliable but mine have always been!

Thanks in advance!

What can I do next?

So What Happened?

Talked with the doc and they said most likely break through bleeding from skipping 1 pill. They said if I was still bleeding today (which I'm not) to call again. Thanks mamas!

When I was on the pill I would have that happen if I missed then doubled up. It didn't happen often but I always knew that if I missed then my period always seemed to come really early and last a longer time than usual. If you feel that something is wrong I would still talk to your doctor since everyone is different.

A longer period indicated a cyst for me, but it resolved itself in a month or two, so no problem.

It sounds like your pill dosage is not high enough. Also - this is the first period after giving birth... then it will be heavier and have more dark/old blood - even brownish. Especially if you've breastfed for a few months or more. Don't sweat it. But get a higher level pill from your doc.

It's normal with the pill, it's breakthrough bleeding, you may need to switch if it happens often. Good luck!

I'm with Rebecca G. This used to happen to me alot when I was on Loestrin. Since switching to Trivora, I havn't had the issue. You might need a higher dose of estrogen.

stress can do a lot of things so if you have had stress in your life it could just be that. but my body responds to birth control (since i had my son) by spotting midway through every cycle too. but then my "real" period (what the b/c says should be) is barely spotting too. i have tried generic ortho and am now on generic loestrin, and get the same results. talk to your dr. but after a baby, things change. hopefully it's just that. good luck!
