Bleeding While on the Pill

I'm on the pill and had requested to go back o n it to regulate my periods. I was getting my period sometimes every 21-24 days, sometimes 16...and it'd last up to 11 days! So I went back on the pill, in Feb. I have spotting for 2 or 3 days, usually in the 2nd week of pills. Last month, my period began about a week early, and lasted about 12 days! Now I had complained to my doctor that they'd been a lot heavier, so now I have maybe one heavy day, but why am I starting a week early on the Pill, etc. Just wondering if anyone had this happen and any suggestions what to ask my doctor to look for. Going to call the office Monday. Thanks so much!

Sounds like you may benefit from an ultrasound. When I complained recently of longer, heavier periods my doctor immediately scheduled an ultrasound. It wasn't clear enough so she did a vaginal one. All possible problems are ruled out and I don't need an ablation. If I understand correctly, these problems can either be caused by illness or the early stages of change of life (perimenopause, yes at 38!). Instead of going back on the pill, I had my hormone bloodwork done and am now using a BHRT cream for the second half of the cycle with success. I think the doctor makes all the difference now. I have a very progress woman doctor who understands and keeps up to date with the whats available to treat patients. If you don't get the answers from your doctor on Monday, find someone else.
Good luck.

I had the same issue with the previous pill I was on. So the last time I went to the doctor, she switched my pill and I don't have the problem anymore.

Good luck!

There are different formulas for all the pills and some work better for bleeding than others depending on when you experience the bleeding and which pill you are on now. Loestrin, Microgestin, Alesse, or Orthocyclen are some of the ones I try with patients for bleeding. Always give a new pill about 3 months to see if it has an effect. Good luck.

Ask your doctor about the mini pill, has lot less estrogen in it. http://www.birth-control-comparison.info/minipill.htm I took the pill for a while years ago to just regulate my periods and that is what I took. Check out the web site.

Hi Dee,
I'm going through the same thing right now. I was recently put back on the pill after being off for 10 years because of very heavy, long periods. I'm on my 3rd month of the pill and just got spotting in the 2nd week and then missed any bleeding during the days I was supposed to get it. My dr did explain to me that it sometimes takes several months for your body to adjust to the hormones in the pill and there would be issues like this at the beginning. I'm going to give this a couple more months to see what happens. Certainly if you're overly concerned you should contact your dr. I just happen to be going thru the same thing right now. Good luck to you and hope it improves soon.

I had a lot of mid-cycle bleeding, and my doctor suggested that I had low progesterone. She switched my pill prescription. It would have been wise to actually test my hormone levels before messing with the drugs, but that doctor wasn't too bright.

My new doctor said that I had all classic symptoms of endometriosis, including irregular cycles, bleeding mid-cycle and before/after cycle. Of course, I had a lot of pain, too, and other symptoms of endo. Please research this as a possibility for yourself.

Hope it all works out for you!
