Period Question

My last period was March 2nd or 3rd. I started a few days late, probably from stress since my sister was in a bad car accident. Since then, I haven't had anything until last week, where I started having brown discharge, with just a little bit of blood mixed in. The discharge isn't hardly noticeable, except after using the bathroom. I haven't been sore and haven't cramped, but I usually don't cramp during my periods anyway. This has been going on for nine days now and my normal periods only last five days. I am definitely not pregnant since I haven't had sex during this time period. I don't think stress is a factor, my sister is fine from the accident and nothing else major has happened. I'm hesitant to go to the doctor since I feel fine. Anyone else have this happen to them?

So What Happened?

I finally started to have a "normal" period and it ended up lasting 7 weeks! I finally went to the doctor and he said I had too much estrogen, so I took a progesterone pill for a few days and have started on birth control to hopefully regulate myself back out. I saw the doctor put PCOS on my paperwork, but he said we'll see how I'm doing in a couple of months before he says anything else. Thanks for everyone's help!

I have had the same thing, my dr. called it "dry periods". He says it's normal to have periods like that occassionally but if it's a continous thing to get it checked out. I might have 2 or 3 in a row like that then have "normal" periods for for awhile. I had a friend who had them continously for about 6 months, she had a d&c and was fine afterwards. But I would still talk to your dr. about it.

This has happened to me a couple of times. Once, I mentioned it to my mother. She said she had had the same thing, and it turned out to be a vitamin C deficiency. I took some vitamin C, and within a day my period became regular again. Keep in mind that many things can interfere with a period, and the best thing to do is talk to your doctor. Good luck!

You didn't mention your age, but it's possible you might be having early signs of menopause. My mom started menopause at age 28 and she has described similar symptoms to me. She would go months where she had the brown discharge you describe or no period at all then all of a sudden whe would have one for a month straight.

Hi Amanda,

I wouldn't propose to guess. It could be just about anything. It is a fact that nerves can have an adverse effect on the cycle, even after things are fine again. It's a slow transition back.

See your healthcare provider nevertheless, and very soon. Let us know.

I have the same thing going on. About 5 months ago it happened. I had very dark discharge and on the third day some bleeding, but it was pretty dark also and only lasted a few hours, then it was right back to the black discharge. I took a HPT just to see and it was negative. My next 3 periods were normal, then the last one I had was about 3 weeks late and only black discharge until the third day, then right back to black discharge, just like above. I have my annual appt with the gyno on Thursday and I'm going to ask him about it. I'll let you know what he says. It's probably not a bad idea for you to visit your dr as well.

I say take an HPT just to be sure...since your last period was abnormal in having been late & what you are having now sounds like early pregnancy spotting. Particularly if there is a possibility you could have conceived in February...

You really need to go to your doctor. Some women have what seems like a period when they are first PG (IE your last on). Nine days is a bit long to be wondering about personal abnormal discharge. best to you.

Hey Amanda!

It must be going around!!! I've had the same thing for the past week and this weekend just started having a little bit of red blood. I was thinking it could be "break through" bleeding, since I have PCOS and I've had the brown/black blood (which is old blood)...but this is getting to be ridiculous. I've never had a period for more than 7 days and I think I'm on CD13-15....PITA!!!!

If I come up with any answers, I'll be sure to let you know.

Take care,
God Bless,

Go to the doctor. He may tell you it is nothing. Maybe he won't. You need to know.

This could be any number of things. It could be an injury from the accident. It could be due to breastfeeding. It could be early stages of menopause. You could be pregnant. A friend of mine's mom had three "regular" periods while pregnant with her. (gestational age was measured by ultrasound) In any case, I agree with the other women here that are urging you to go to your doctor.

You are probably very fertile right now. The same thing happened to me and I thought I was in the clear, but I was not. I now have a two year old. Be very careful if you are not wanting to have a baby right now. I would also call your gyno.

are you still nursing? maybe as you went through all the stress from the car accident you unconsciously increased or decreased the amount you were nursing, and your hormones changed accordingly. i know that whenever i changed my nusing habits, my periods got weird.

I haven't had a period in awhile since I am in a back to back pregnancy right now. But when I am on my regular cycle I often have brown discharge, especially before and after a period. It isn't specifically normal, but it doesn't have to mean anything is wrong either. It doesn't hurt to get it checked out though. When it first started happening to me, I went in for it, and they put me on progesterone supplements, but it didn't help. They didn't seem too worried, and so I just live with it. But I think it could also be a sign of infection, or other problems, so I would advise at least talking to your gyno about it. Hope it stops for you. It is annoying, but apparently sometimes our bodies just change in the way they do things. :) Especially after having kids.
