Advice about how small your size is while being pregnant.I have been told how small I am for being pregnant. I have been told I must be having a small baby and what does my doctor think. I am 5'3 small, medium frame. The other pregnancies were small not real big. with twins until around 35 weeks I looked like I was having one baby. I didnt get any stretch marks so I guess thats good. /I used palmers stretch mark cream from 6 weeks twice a day I think that it helped./

all I can say is every woman carries it differently and every pregnancy is different. I was the reverse because I needed infertility treatments and being on progesterone through my first trimester I gained weight very fast (60 ls!! by the time I delivered) and I always hated it when people would comment on how big I was!!! pretty much calling me fat!! they would say that I was having a large baby or twins!! I am also 5'3 with a medium to petite frame. A few people even made me cry because they told me to spend less time eating and more time being active! when I did watch what I ate and I was active. People that did not even know me at all!! or know my situation. I had an 8lb 2oz baby girl that came with an olympic sized swimming pool of amniotic fluid! So some people just need to keep their comments to themselves! and as long as you and yr babies are healthy that is all that matters.

I wouldn't worry about it. With my second baby, I gained only 25 pounds but I ate as much as I wanted and my doctor wasn't concerned at all. He said the baby takes what it needs and as long as I was getting the calcium I needed then not to worry about it. My baby was born healthy and strong. I remember the delivery doctor thinking the baby was going to be no more than 5 lbs but I delivered a healthy 6 lb baby. Just enjoy the pregnancy!

Just say "WOW aren't I lucky??" most women are probably jealous if they are making comments! I was the size of a small elephant, hee hee..be grateful and say even "thanks for noticing I am healthy and so is baby!", or even better, ignore them and pretend you didn't hear them! :)

I only gained 13 lbs with my first child, and you couldn't tell I was pregnant from the back, even up to the end! I had a healty 6 lb 9 oz baby girl. Unless your doctor is concerned, I wouldn't worry about it. Tell people MYOB!!

It wasn't until the middle of my sixth month that I finally had to buy some elastic waisted pants. And even in my ninth month I wasn't as big as most. I had to hear similar comments that you are hearing I'm sure. Baby was fine and healthy and came 3 days after the due date.
Now, a friend of mine is enduring the opposite side of the commentors. She keeps getting remarks about how huge she is and there's no way they have her due date correct. Obviously, she is not thrilled with the remarks. And why people think it's perfectly okay to say things like that is beyond me!
It all comes down to genetics and body type as to how you carry your babies. Some bodies naturally "hide" the pregnancy and others show within the first couple months.
Just tell them that you and baby are healthy and thanks for their concern. And be thankful that you are not big as I'm sure that would be much more uncomfortable.

I ran into this when I was pregnant with both my kids. In fact 3 days before my sons due date I looked like I was only 5 months pregnant. However due to my appearance it wasn't that either were small I just carried them differently. They were close to my back - which was a result in back labor.

People seem to like to share their opinions but if you are really concerned I would check with your physician.

Hope that helps!

This is between you and your doctor --- it's nobody else's business. Make sure you attend all of your doctor appointments for your health and the health of your baby. Talk to your doctor about your concerns. He can either reassure you or diagnose you. Keep in mind that bodies come in all shapes and forms --- even with pregnancy. Just grin and bear it with what others are saying. People are rude when it comes to pregnancy. Don't know why. You have 3 boys and you're pregnant with another?!?! Wow! How was your size with your other pregnancies???

When I was pregnant with both kids, I was small. As a matter of fact, with #2 people didn't notice I was pregnant until I was about 7.5 months into it. I just shrugged my shoulders and smiled and left them to ponder things alone. Just shrug it off and walk away. People are kinda stupid when it comes to pregnant girls or girls who "look" pregnant - sorry!

People used to say the same thing to me all the time. I am a small girl to began with 5'3 about 114 pounds. So people would always tell me that because i am little i should be showing more. I would just shrug my shoulders and didn't let it bother me. My doc. said everything was fine so I didn't worry about it. Even the day I went into labor and I went into the hospital the first thing the nurse asked me was if I was full term and if the baby was a healthy weight? I was 39 weeks and my daughter was 6 lbs 9 0z and 19 1/2 inches long. So don't worry about it too much just take it as a complement because you know that most people are looking at you with envy.

Hi J.,

You sound exactly like me! I just gave birth to my first a month ago. I also am 5'3 small, medium frame. I didn't start looking pregnant until about 5-6 months. Everyone kept telling me how small I was. It is actually unnerving because you start to question whether something is wrong with the baby. I talked to my doctor and he told me to take it as a compliment. He measured my belly and everything looked right on target. I would only listen to your doctor.. they are the experts. Other women are simply comparing their pregnancies to yours. I gained 25 pounds. Now, I did have our son 3 weeks early but he was 6 pds 3 ounces. Which I think is very healthy. And, to be honest with you, I am looking at my post-baby body now and am pretty excited that I carried so small.:)
Just remember to keep yourself healthy and as long as you are gaining some weight... everything should be fine.

People probably think they're flattering you. I am amazed how many armchair midwives there are out there. Everyone feels entitled to an opinion. Depending on your mood, you could make a joke out of it--if someone says, "You're tiny! Are you OK?" you can say, "Oh, yeah, I've got a comfy studio apartment in there--no need for a three car garage with just one baby," or something like that. Enjoy your healthy pregnancy! ;)

I too was very small during my pregnancies...even my third. No one could believe it was my third nor what trimester I was in. The reality is, don't worry about what people say. Take it as a compliment that you'll have less to lose. I always joked that I must have a lot of room in there. LOL.

Also, you have to consider your height, etc. The taller you are, the more stretched room you have vertically. So, take it with a grain of salt. My kids were 6lbs 3oz; 5 lbs 15.5 oz; and 6lbs 5 oz in order. They were healthy when it came to their birthweight....my 1st son's birthweight had nothing to do with his CP, and I was so THANKFUL that I didn't have vaginal births with larger babies! I bow to those who have!

Take care and don't worry unless your doc says to. If they haven't said anything, then everyone else's comments are just compliments!

I heard the same thing all the time and in fact, I measured about a month behind until the end of my pregnancy. The OB did some testing and found out everything was fine--my son was just under 7 pounds full-term. My response to people was always positive, such as "I know, aren't I lucky?" or "well, it will make the weight easier to lose!" On the occasion when I felt really angry at the comment, I would simply say "my doctor says everything is fine." People always feel the need to comment, so don't let it get to you.

I got comments all through my first pregnancy about being small. All along I measured right on, and the doctor had no concerns... until 37 weeks. I had an ultrasound to see if the baby was breech. He was breech, and the ultrasound also showed that I had no amniotic fluid. I must have stopped producing it sometime around 36-37 weeks. I had a c-section that day. The baby was fine, 5 lbs, 12 oz. I don't know if I had a low fluid level the whole time, and that's why I was small, or if I really was completely normal until 37 weeks. Discuss your concerns with your doctor and ignore everyone else.

Just as everyone is saying if your doctor isn't concerned then just let these people talk and try your best to ignore it and not let it bother you. I am 21 weeks pregnant with my second and am barely showing. She's just as big as she should be I just tend to carry my children more in my back. I really don't look pregnant until I'm 7 months. I get comments ALL the time and it is annoying. People are either jealous or it's really just hard for them to believe that you're really as far along as you say you are. My first was 8 lbs which was pretty big the doctor kept saying "he was really hiding in your back wasn't he?" Have fun with your pregnancy and don't worry about what other people say or think.

Oh dear, I'm sorry you're dealing with this. I did, too...it wasn't until I was 7 months pregnant that it became apparent that I was, indeed, pregnant and not just fat. I can't tell you how many people made the "Oooooh you're pregnant, I never would have guessed" when I was preggers.

At any rate, the best you can do with these people is be gracious and say something to the effect that you and your doctor are quite pleased with the baby's development and that you appreciate their concern, but really there is nothing to worry about.

If you're tall like me, you can also use the "there's a lot of space in there for him to go besides out" excuse. That usually gets them to ponder at least long enough for you to make your escape. Hee hee!

i've been getting a lot of comments lately that i look like i'm farther along than i really am, which was surprising for me because for my first two pregnancies, i heard all the time how small my belly was. i asked my doctor yesterday if my measurements were normal because of the comments i've been getting and he told me i'm actually on the small side. so i'd just ask your doctor and be satisfied with what he/she tells you.

It's been fun reading all the responses so I thought I would share my experiences. With my first one you could barely tell I was pregnant until about 7 1/2 months. One day my husband walked in after work, took one look at me and said, "Whoa! You're huge!!" Luckily for him I was in a good mood that day, lol! With my second one I started showing at 3 months and by the time I was 6 months along and they heard the due date people would ask if I was having twins. One man at church said, "Your belly is huge! You're going to have to get a tray or something to carry that thing around on!" My first one was 7 lbs 5 oz and my second one was 8 lbs 12 oz! So my advice would be to write down all the rude/inconsiderate things people say and then laugh about them later. Don't worry what they think as long as you are healthy and your doctor isn't worried. BTW I am way jealous that you don't have stretch marks. I got them with both pregnancies and of course with the second one I got a completely new set. I mean, couldn't the old ones just stretch again? So no bikinis for me! ;)

You know what, these are people are rude. That being said, just ignore them. It's one of those boundary crossing things people just don't seem to be able to resist like TOUCHING YOU when you're pregnant.

Here's the guideline: from your pelvic bone to the top of your fundus should measure a centimeter for every week of gestation give or take 2-3 AND taking into consideration the position of the baby.

I'm sure you're just fine...better than fine.

Be polite--at first--and clear about your boundaries. They are being RUDE so it IS OK for you to tell them your body is off limits.

You could say something like: thank you for your concern, we are doing well; then move on to another topic. I have been known to say things like that but without leaving it with the tact above; I think I've ended it with: Don't worry, if something turns out terribly wrong I'll be sure to make a public announcement for you. I don't suggest that, but, I'd surely understanad if you did. lol

Just take good care of yourself; eating properly, take your suppliments, exercise to the level you can, and let your body do what it knows how to do. If something were of concern your provider would tell you.

I had a friend who had her baby early (scary) at about 7 1/2 months. She said she never showed! She was so sad, because she really really wanted to look pregnant, but never did. Weird, huh? The second time, she did get a belly and was so happy, but I KNOW she didn't get as big as I did.
Wow, do I get big! My second pregnancy, I actually grew out of all my clothes (even the ones that saw me through all the way to my due date with my first) with 5 weeks to go. I tried to buy bigger ones so I could cover my tummy, but to get them that big, they were two sizes too big for my arms and shoulders (they'd slide off one shoulder!) I literally had to sew myself some new shirts. I made the tummy part of the pattern 3 sizes bigger than I made the shoulders. I looked like some weird dress on the hanger, long in front and short in back. But when it was on me, the front and back were the same length.
I would also close the refrigerator door on it, bump it into all sorts of things, and had a hard time getting behind the steering wheel.
I would thank my lucky stars that you're small and don't carry way out front. And when people say your belly is small, say, "thanks, isn't it so cute?" Or if it's a woman with kids, say, "oh yeah? How big did you get?" That way, it turns the conversation away from you.

Hey, this is so much better then someone asking if you are having triplets because you are so large. I was small and my sister was large so I have heard it all. I deliverd my first five weeks early and didn't get big at all. I had to finish up a school year with grading and stuff. I brought my one week old to the school to get my grades and clean my room. As I carried her in the hall, I met many fellow teachers would say, "whose baby is that...no way, you were prgnant." So you know, everyone is different. You may be huge next time. so shrug and say: "Everyone is different, thanks for the concern." and change the subject. You owe no one anything so just put up your wall, acknowledge them, and move on."

When I was pregnant with my daughter, I dropped 12 lbs almost immediately because I was so tired and so sick that I hardly ate and when I did, it was just salads. When I went to a WIC appt, they pretty much chewed me up one side and down the other because of the weight loss. I told them, "First of all...look at me....I'm not small...and until my doctor, tells me I should be concerned, I'm not going to worry about it."

As long as you are healthy and the baby is healthy, that is all that matters. Your doctor will tell you when/if there is a reason to be concerned. People who say you are small or whatever, maybe they are just jealous because they were much bigger when they were pregnant.

I was small with all my kids and each weighed in at over 8 pounds. I didn't even get comments about being pregnant until I was almost done and then most everyone was dumfounded that I was that far along. During my last pregancy even the doctor I saw was amazed since she was a big surprise and I found out I was pregnant at 32 weeks. Yep, several negative tests later she was only found by ultrasound when none of the treatments for IBS were working. Not a single pregnancy symptom either with any of them.
