Hi! I'm new here, and I was wondering if any of the moms (or moms-to-be) have any success stories after taking Metformin and/or Clomid. Thanks!

What can I do next?

Hi. I was on Clomid for eight months. Unfortunately, I did not conceive. It was the last stop for us before invitro, which we decided not to do. I was ovulating just fine, but the eggs weren't getting down my fallopian tubes. Have you had the three basic infertility tests yet? I am assuming you have since you are on Clomid. I do remember feeling very fertile, all the time!! I wish you the best of luck. I did not feel sick or have any bad side effects. I could definitely feel it when I ovulated, though.
We ended up adopting two beautiful girls who are now 10 and 13, so don't give up hope! Keep trying!

First and foremost Cathy, be sure you are seeing a reproductive endocrinologist(RE)rather than just an OB/GYN. Many OB/GYNs are handing out these rx's quite often without what I think is a complete look at what the problem is and why you would need the meds in the first place! I love my OB, but by the time you get to the point of considering medications, an RE should absoutely be the one to see-afterall, it is their specialty.
I had a very surprising responce with Clomid, my RE wanted me just to try it for 3 cycles before we moved onto IVF to satisfy the insurance company (sad huh?) and amazingly it worked the first time!! Pretty strong stuff for a woman who was told I would need to use donor eggs! It is not all that common to have such a dramatic response though. The metformin (yes, a diabetic medicine) also works well for infertility, but I am not sure exactly how as it was not commonly used when I became pregnant. I know it does help with polycystic ovaries.
I wish you luck, patience and humor to keep your sanity during this journey!

Hi C B,

I am currently 32 years old with a history of thyroid cancer followed by a total thyroidectomy, radiation therapy and later developed PCOS. When I was younger (before my hubby) I was told by many a doctor my chance of conceiving were close to none. I met my hubby and we tried for 2 years without fertility (only Armour Thyroid) and didn't have any luck. I was on Armour Thyroid, Clomid and Metformin when we conceived our son (the first round) at 29 years old. My cycle was longer (33 - 43 days) so ovulation was later than the norm as well. My pregnancy was fairly normal and we now have a very healthy 3 year old son. We haven't tried for a second but now we know the tools we need 1. Clomid 2. Metformin 3. later ovulation dates 4. patience 5. great doctors. Please email me if you have any questions. Good luck!

Hi Cathy,

My husband & I tried to get pregnant for five years on our own. Because I was fast approaching 40 we finally decided to see a fertility specialist. He took one look at me and my past OB/GYN records and prescribed Metformin (3x a day) and 5 days of Clomid 3 days after each period. He then assured us that we would be pregnant within the year. We got conceived in three months. I absolutely believe in the Metformin/Clomid combo. The other perk is that I stayed on Metformin while I was pregnant and it kept my pregnancy weight in check. I only gained 20lbs. and had a healthy 6.5lb. baby girl. Don't know how or why but it works!!

Cathy, are you a diabetic? Metformin is a generic name for Glucophage, used to treat type II diabetes. Clomid is a fertility drug used to increase egg production, sometimes leading to multiple conceptions. I have a family member who used fertility drugs and got pregnant twice after not getting pregnant for a decade after a first natural pregnancy. She now has three healthy children. I think you need to consult a fertility specialist about the effects of diabetic medication on fertility and the difficulties of a pregnancy while diabetic. I developed gestational diabetes in my third pregnancy and two decades later became a type II diabetic. Fertility drugs certainly can work. I don't know about the drug interaction of the two you mentioned.

I actually got pregnant the first month that I took Clomid. I have been trying to get pregnant for over a year. So all I needed was a jumpstart and the Clomid helped. Unfortunately I did have a miscarriage but it had nothing to do with the Clomid so no worries.

Hi Cathy,

I do have a success story! I took Clomid and one month after my first dose, I was pregnant. My hormones just needed regulating. I did try many alternative methods first and it took my doctor about 2 years before he prescribed Clomid due to the side effects. I wish you all the best!

Hi C B! I started trying for #2 in 05/06. In October I was Dx PCOS w/ insulin resistance. I started Clomid/Met in November. I am on 200 mg Clomid and 1000 mg Metformin right now. I FINALLY O'ed this cycle and am now CD (cycle day) 32. I am calling the Dr today for a blood draw to know for sure, but think I have succeeded.

There are a couple of other websites I'd like to invite you too.

Ome is a Christian Infertility Message Board called Hannah's Prayer. http://www.hannahsprayer.org (I am J. A. and others there do not know that I may be expecting.) If you are not Christian, please disregard this site.

The other is a gereral health issue site called Daily Strength. http://dailystrength.org (I am Janyan, and have left a message in my journal for "friends" to read.)

Praying for all of us to get our BFM (Big Fat Maybe) this year.
