Hello Mommies, I'm planning a bday party for my daughter, and will be using the multi-purpose room of a CHURCH. Any ideas on games appropriate for the venue. I plan to give out about three prizes to the participants that win. I have a karaoke set-up with music, just looking for some activities to keep the crowd engaged for a time. I should also note that this is a blessing ceremony as well as a party to follow, the crowd will be mixed. The theme of the party is music, she loves to sing.

Thanks!
Marie

Hi J.,
Star 101.3 had a game this week to win Pink tickets. They played two lines of a well-known song and the person playing the game had to give the next line. Maybe it would be fun for the singers to modify this with live kar. music. You'd have to number people off and then call their numbers raffle style to see who's to answer. Maybe it would be easy, or points put toward prizes.
That apples game (?) sold at Rick's Picks in Danville is popular. I don't know if it can be modified for music.
Also, Dancing with the Stars had a contest. The couples had to make up a fifties routine to music. That could be fun...
Hope you get great ideas,
G.

Apples to Apples is a GREAT game that will work with all ages at once. It doesn't matter how different your crowd is, all will be able to play. We play it at our church on game night, and it is always one of the most popular tables.

The Karoke machine is great, you can have the sing along and you can also play name that tune and you can also do the show that Wayne Brady host "Don't Forget the Lyrics". And instead of spending money on prizes, give them cash prizes, starting with a $1 or even 50 cents and ending with $5. 13 years olds rather have money than some prize that they will give away anyways.

A scavanger hunt is always fun, We took the girls to a mall and they had to find stuff in the mall and since the majority of the cell phones have cameras, you don't have to provide those.

You should run all ideas by your child before you do them. That way she won't be embarrased the next day she goes to school. Teenagers always won't their parties to be the talk of the school.

Some party game ideas I like to do with youth group (even now) are:

1. Who am I? - give everybody a name tag with a famous person's name on it, put it on each guests' back. They have to go around the room asking yes/no questions about who they are. ie - am I alive? Dead? male? female? etc.... Since the birthday girl is into music, you can have singers/composers spanning different genres, decades, etc... It depends on the crowd and how easy/hard you want to make the game. Keep a list of who "discovered" their famous person, so you know who to give the prize to (first person to guess who they are wins). It's a good ice breaker game.

2. Scavenger hunt (with a twist) - break people up into teams of 4-5, give each team a list of things to look for. BUT they can only look for these things among their stuff (purses, backpacks, etc...)!! It's amazing what people carry around with them!! The first team to find all the stuff on their list wins the prize.

3. Find the picture - before anyone gets to the party, take a small picture or stamp and place it in the room. Then ask the guests to find "a picture of an eagle" or what ever the picture is in the room. Once somebody finds the picture, they need to QUIETLY go to the side, watching everybody else find the picture WITHOUT "helping". The first person to find the picture gets the prize, but it's fun to watch everybody find the picture, so the game really ends when everybody finds it.

I could go on and on, but these are some of my favorites!! I hope this helps!!

Pin the tail on something, and musical chairs are ALWAYS fun, even at 13. Maybe, Pin a Kiss on that Kid from Twilight? Or Pin a Promise Ring on a Jonas Brother? Obviously karaoke, since she likes to sing. When they all sing together it's really fun.

If they are crafty, you can find lots of beads and such at a craft store and they can make necklaces, bracelets, etc. You can also look at books by Klutz Press that have activity books showing how to make jewelery, or little books, or paper folding crafts. Then you don't have to do prizes... If you are set on contests, pin the tail on the donkey type games are fun for many ages; just pick a theme that fits your daughter's interests like pin the earring on the model, pin the pillow on the bed, something like that). I was going to suggest a scavenger hunt, but that may only work if you know the neighborhood and the people in it really well.

How about a dance contest and/or a game of name that tune.

Hello J.

As one Christian MOTHER to another, I suspect your 13 year old does not refer to you, at least to her friends as her “MOMMIE”…so get over that one sister.

I hope you get some game ideas, but I think your best idea is the karaoke set-up. The most fun thing for a 13 year old would probably be a sleepover with movies, nail painting, pizza and a nice brunch in which you could include the other MOTHER’S when they pick up their daughters. (The karaoke set-up would still be fun at home—maybe even more so since they will be uninhibited by BOYS).

Blessings…..

PS…Forget the prizes, invest in lots of colored nail polish, remover, cotton balls etc., junk food and soda for your NEW TEEN!
