Part Time Daycare Costs?

I am starting Nursing school on January 10th. I am very lucky that my mom is going to watch my kids for me. I am going to pay her however, and want to know how much you pay for part-time (or full-time) daycare. She will be watching them 3 days/ week, 2 days are full day hours, and the third day is for about 4 1/2 hours. She will be watching my 14month old and my 2 1/2 year old. In addition, she will be taking my 4 and 2 1/2 year old to preschool some days and picking them up. How much is a fair price? We have already discussed that we are not doing nanny rates or in-home daycare rates; we are basing it off facility daycare rates. Thanks for your help!

So What Happened?

Thanks everyone! I really appreciate the input. We decided on $550/mo; she wouldn't take any more :) Thanks!

Bear in mind that daycares have business costs involved with each space they make available that your mom won't. Some places won't even take kids part time because those costs would eat too much of the profit and some just charge more per the hour for a part time slot.

Ask your mom what she thinks on paying and come to an agreement.

My DD attends an in-home daycare 5 days a week, which is $25/day or $450/month. When my provider is closed I have registered at the new local facility which is $3.15/hr (based on age) which is roughly $29/day for me.

Your best bet is to poll some day care centers in your area. Cost does tend to vary significantly based on where you live, but is usually tiered based on the care provider to child ratio mandated by the state for the age of the child. We pay just under $350 per week for two kids (5; 2.5), 3 days per week. At our center, the day is as long as 10 hours; no price differential for shorter days. This price includes a 15% discount because of the two kids (often centers will give a discount on the (lower) tuition for the older child, but this is the first I've found which discounts both children). This is truly low to moderate pricing for where we live (MA); some of the centers are a good 40-50% higher.

My sister watches my other sister's kids roughly about the same amount of hours per week. She watches a 3 1/2 year old and a 1 year old and gets $175 a week. She's in Maryland and most daycare centers don't have part-time hours in the area and would charge for full time care, and in their area it would be around $300-$350 a week for her 2 kids. We have a drop in center here in Texas that charges $6.50 an hour per kid.

Around here for an in home care person, is about $25 a day. So, what you should do since you are basing it on care facility rates, is call around your area.
