What Would You Offer??

Hi, I am in Illinois. I can give you some comparable rates. A full day is considered to be 7-9 hours. Anything over that is considered a "long" or overtime day. For a day such as this with a new born and a 2 1/2 yr old I would charge $50 minimum probably closer to $60 per day. you are actually talking ablout close to 12 hour days. you won't find many sitters who do 12 hour shifts for the same pay as an 8 hour day. I would plan at the very least $125 a week for those 2 days. newborns require a lot more hands on care and sitters charge accordingly. Nanny's charge anywhere from $10 to $15 an hour.

I am taking care of my neighbors 2 month old from 6:30am-4pm two sometimes 3 days a week. They are paying me $75 a day.

I don't know for sure how daycare rates are there compared to IL but here, two full days a week is considered part-time and I think anything around $300 per child per month is normal (that is assuming that normal daycare rates around here at the low end are $500 for full time).

But since it's only 2 days a week, maybe you could talk with her. Is she expecting something like $5 an hour? That would end up costing more like $400-500 a month. I would suggest offering her a set rate per week - for 2 or 3 days no matter how many hours.

Maybe $100 a week? Or if that is too much, offer her $75.

Well, you have to pay more for her to come to your house. You need to compare nanny rates, rather than chilcare center, or in home center rates. You get those cheaper because their are more children, so less one on one for your kiddos. In home is also cheaper because of several children, and they can still get stuff done at their house throughout the day..and keep their own children. So those are not fair comparisons. You are going to have to pay at least $10 per hour in my opinion. Especially because that is a long day. I never worked for more than 10 hours in a day, so you should comp well for that. There are many nannies who make more than that, but this woman does not sound like she has past experience. Not sure if that helps, but its something to consider. Call nanny agencies and go from there. ~A.~

I would offer 10/hour for your "regular" hours and 12/hour for "extra" hours (like if you need some time on a third day). Good luck.

I'd start calling day care providers in your area and asking what their going rates are and use those as an example of where you should be.

Have you asked this person yet what kind of compensation she's looking for? With our first child, we were going to take him to a day care facility when the mother of a neighbor became available. We paid her what we would have paid the day care facility because it was more convenient and one-on-one care.

Call in-home day care providers and see what they charge.
We spent almost $20K in a reasonable day care facility in 2009 for 2 full-time kids (1 in the one-year-old room and the other in the toddler room). Another friend found in home care for her 2 kids for $25/day each, but it was completely unstructured and not a good environment long-term.
