Hi A....
We always try to stay at Americany sort of hotels. We like the whole comfort factor. And I tend to stick with the major chains just because we know what to expect. I just go down my mental list of hotels and do a Google search. I even tried Hotels.com... and expedia.com. Those were helpful because they always had places near the Eiffel Tower and it was nice to have a bunch of place to compare but the price was either too high or if it was affordable the comments said things like... found used condom in the room... door wouldn't lock... no window to outside... Needless to say.. I didn't want to stay at anything scarry or obviously too pricy.
We stayed at the Courtyard by Marriot in Colombes right outside of Paris. It was super clean and newish feeling with an American sized King sized bed... flat screen tv... still European sized room... but it was very clean and comfortable. We had a car so it was nice that they had a parking garage too. We took public transport to actually get around Paris though. There was a bus stop just a few feet from the front of the hotel. The bus went straight into the train station. We stood around like a bunch of lost tourists for awhile at the train station before I was able to find someone who spoke English. (None of us spoke a word of French.) Then it was like one stop away from the Arc de Triumph. We ended up taking a cab back to the hotel though because we were not looking forward to the whole public transport thing again. We brought our sat-nav along with us and had the address of the hotel bookmarked to show the driver. He thought that was pretty cool. He spoke English but we probably only understood 1 out of every 5 words he said.
Oh... another idea... my friend just took a trip and was able to call the USO for advice on where to stay. They were able to help her find a clean hotel close to everything. The hotel she went to even offered a shuttle to pick them up from the airport.
Good luck... take tons of pictures... and have a great time!! :0)
