Packing Clothes Without Wrinkles

Just wondering what you've found to be the best way to pack dresses and fancy clothes in luggage for an out-of-state wedding so that they won't get wrinkled. I was going to lay them flat in the bottom of the suitcase and then let them drape over the side, pack more clothes on top of them and then fold the ends of the clothes that are hanging out, over the top of the other clothes, so they'd be curved more than folded flat. But, I also thought I heard somewhere that if you roll your clothes in towels, that was supposed to help. As luck would have it, I'm giving them towels for a wedding gift and was planning on wrapping them once I got there, so I have the towels to do it with. Does anyone have any experience with that method? Does it work? I'd really like to avoid dealing with a garment bag. Thanks!

I save all my old plastic dry cleaner bags and use them when packing. Place garment into a dry cleaner bag and hang in garment bag or fold into suitcase. It really works. I think if you try and lay flat and fold ends you will have all sorts of weird wrinkles. Good luck and enjoy the wedding!

Rumor has it rolling is the way to go! I've never had luck at all! even if I get it all organized, by the time it gets thrown on the plane, it is all wrinkled.

I think personally the trick is to have your suitcase so tightly packed that things can't shift. That way they stay in the same position you put them in.

Are you staying in a hotel? I would just send them out as soon as you get there to be pressed!

I also fold the clothes lengthwise and then roll them. Works pretty well. Also, take a spray bottle then fill it with water at the hotel. Spritz the clothes before you hang them up and give them a good firm tug to pull the wrinkles out. I often do that instead of ironing at home.

If you roll, make sure there are no wrinkles when you roll the clothes up. If there are, you'll just make the situation worse. Are you staying in a hotel? Most hotels have irons and ironing boards in the rooms. If not, hang the garments in the bathroom before you shower. The steam will help with any minor wrinkles.

Also try bringing along a wrinkle releaser. It's in a spray bottle (sorry, can't remember the brand name). You spray your clothes until they're just slightly damp, pull them flat, and the wrinkles are gone. It works on regular clothes, but it's worth a try on dressier clothes.

I travel often for work and haven't found a way to keep my business clothes from wrinkling. I just have to use the hotel's iron when I get there.

I don't have space for a towel in my suitcase, so I haven't been able to try it.

Just in case, I'd prepare with either something like a wrinkle releasing product or making sure you have an iron available at your destination.

Suzanne,
If you are bringing mostly dressy clothes, consider using a garment bag. These are still considered carry-on items and you can request the steward(ess) to hang it for you (assuming you are flying). If not, I have always taken my dress clothes on the hanger with a dry cleaning bag over it. Then, I loosely fold it 3-4 times (kind of like a loose roll). It has worked for me. I sometimes even pack my folded clothes in bags to reduce wrinkling. My husband, however, uses your method of bundling pants and jackets around his folded items in the center. Good luck and have fun.

hello
my friend used to roll her clothes and swore by it. Additionally, are you staying at a hotel, most rooms have ironing boards.. can't you press your clothes there? bring a thing cotton like cloth or even a white t-shirt and use that to cover the possible delicate clothing when you iron, this way no burn marks but only added heat to remove the wrinkles. what about one of those portable steam irons?
best of luck

If you wrap them in towels, keep in mind the FUZZ FACTOR, you'll have lint all over everything!

My grandmother taught me to use tissue paper in the clothing when folding neatly for packing. Works like a charm!
