Pacifier Blues

Please help!!! My daughter is about to be 11 months. She just began walking and I think it is time for her to give up her pacifier. She is fine during the day and while she is awake. However, as soon as I put her down for a nap or for the night she starts looking for her pacifier. Does anyone know of a good way besides going cold turkey, or is that the best way?

What can I do next?

Hi E.,

My name is M. & I am a mother to 2 wonderful boys a 10 yr old & a 15 month old & had that same problem with my youngest. But he wanted it all day long to chew on. So at night I started giving him a couple of teething tablets & he would suck on those for a little bit & then eventually fall asleep. I only had to do this for a week & then after that he was sleeping without a binky or any help from momma. I hope this helps I know how much trouble it is for us to take this away from them. GOOD LUCK!

We used the cutting method to wean our daughter. Basically made a small hole in the nipple of the pacifier. It took about a week, but she finally decided it was not worth it and stopped looking for it. I learned afterwards that this is a fairly popular method. Hope it works out for you.

All the best

I am a Stay at Home Home of 16 mo infant and a 2 1/2 yr old toddler. I also have a home childcare. My son had a pacifier and when he turned 1 he didn't want it anymore. We didn't have to hide it or anything. He did still go to bed with a bottle, but the Peditruition sd that was good. My daughter never liked them. From my experience most wil get rid of them on there own. My niece was closer to 2 and they had to hide hers. But it helps some with the teething. My daughter liked ice chips instead of the pacifier. Good luck

Hi there E.,
You know you gotta go cold turkey..but also, give her something else she can use to replace the pacifer, like a new teddy bear, or some kind of stuff animal..letting her picking it out. And try it out with one of the sleep times..start with nap time first..then making the transition to night time with the stuff animal..hope it works out...

I agree I would let her have it awhile longer for the teeth cutting issues. It really can help. Like your other responder said most will give it up on their own, but if you have to you can use the cutting method. Both of my children just gave it up all on their own by the time they were 2.

Hi E.,
My name is I. and I am a proud mother of a beautiful spunky 13 month old, i had to do the cold turkey thing, and it only took about a week and a couple of days. At 12 months I thought was long enough for the binkie, so i wanted her off anyway. It just so happened we were shopping in Walmart and she dropped it, we didnt discover that she has lost it until we were getting in the car. She mostly longed for it during naps and bedtime. It hurted my soul when she cried for it, but if I wanted her off, I felt this was the best time. After about a week or so, she realized that she didnt need it and now sleeps so sound without it, she just uses other things to teeth on now ( which is almost everything ). Good luck, its hard, but somebody's gotta do it!!!

you can try cutting the tip of the pacifer off - a little bit each day until the tip is gone completly. It should make it lose the soothing effect - and then they won't want it anymore.
