The phase of Ovulation triggers your period 14 days after ovulation. So, in theory, if you have sex 14 days prior to your next period, you should increase your chances.
14 days after your period may not be the right time for your body if you're not on a 28 day cycle. If you have a 35 day cycle (like I did) you will want to start having sex around your 18th day (not the 14th day) since it would be approximately the 21st day in which you would ovulate.
Sperm is supposed to live outside the male body (in yours) for up to 2 days, so they say an every-other day schedule should be sufficient for catching that window of opportunity.
If you start on your 17th or 18th day, and have sex everyother day for the next 10 days, that means that you will have had 5 chances to hit your ovulation cycle on both the beginning, middle and end of your ovulation cycle.
Hope this helps.
Quick Edit: My temp varied ALOT everyday wether I was ovulating or not, so don't rely on your tempurature entirely as an indication of ovulation. I tried taking my temp for a year and was NEVER able to pin-point my ovulation time using that so be careful with this method. This lead me to a year of disappointment every month.)
