Overnight Diapers? - Tulsa,OK

For the last 3 nights my 15 mo old has leaked pee through his diapers overnight. He sleeps from around 8pm to 7am, without waking up during the night. I bought Pampers baby dry diapers to try, since they said "up to 12 hours overnight protection", but they leaked just like the normal diapers. Any suggestions on diapers that will do a better job? He drinks a lot of water during the day and nurses before bed so he's pretty wet in the mornings. Aside from setting an alarm and waking him to do a middle of the night diaper change (which doesn't seem like a great idea) I'm at a loss. Help, I'm tired of washing sheets!

What can I do next?

So What Happened?

Thanks for the advice ladies! He's in size 4 (22 to 37 lbs) and is only 25 lbs, so moving up a size will be a pretty big diaper. Which is fine, if that's what works! We'll try the huggies and invest in some waterproof pads too.

We've always used either Earth's Best or Seventh Generation (neither contain chemicals or chlorine) and the only time we've ever had issues w/leaking has been when I needed to move DS up a size. They've been great!

So it could be the diapers themselves and/or the size.

We use the next biggest size of Pampers Extra Protection and have only had one or two leaks ever.

I also used the Pampers Baby Dry Extra Protection diapers with my guy and was disappointed the first two nights. Then I came here on Mamapedia to read answers from other mamas and came across a couple of suggestions that worked, and yes, he slept 11 hours, sometimes a little longer, like you son.

1) Fold the top of the diaper down, front and back, before fastening, it worked like a charm to keep him from leaking, the only time he ever leaked along the top again was one night when I was ill and forgot to do it :(
2) Make sure you fan the diaper out completely all along the sides and bottom between his legs so as much area as possible is "open" for absorption.

3) I found this out by accident, go up a size in diapers. When I bought my second box of these diapers he had grown some so I bought the next size up. I was very pleasantly surprised to find they held even more, which makes sense as you have more area and material there to absorb.
4) And something I did with all my little ones to avoid constant sheet washing was have a few large waterproof pads to put one under them on top of the sheet, if they leaked I removed that to wash, and the sheet was fine. I learned that from my mother who raised 11 children, including a set of twins. She HAD to have tricks up her sleeve!

Last but not least, try the Kirkland (Costco) Supreme brand if you can, I ordered some samples right before he was potty trained, they were the absolute best diapers we ever used, had I known about them earlier they would have been the only diapers we used!!

I haven't read through the other answers (sitting in hospital after having my 3rd baby!) BUT the only overnight diaper that works for me is Pampers. I can't remember the exact name but it isn't baby dry...it is the nighttime version of their diaper. My middle little girl was leaking every night (especially with huggies - neither their day or night time versions work for us!) We've only had one leaky night in about 3 months or so since we've started using the nighttime pamper brand! Good luck, I hope you find something that works for you!

Ususally I found that when the diapers started leaking it was time to move up to the next size, and that fixed the problem.

Puddle pads, puddle pads, puddle pads! Get wool if you can because the lanolin does something to keep the bacteria from growing.
They were my saving grace. As GrammaRocks shared before, you put these on top of the sheet and when the leak occurs, you have saved the sheet. You might also want to think about going up one size in diapers if he is getting close to the size limit. It will give you more absorbing material.

Another vote for Huggies Overnights from me. They come in a purple box. They are a bit more expensive, but you're only using 1/day, so it's worth it to me! If my kids started leaking out of their Overnights then I bumped up a size, even if it was one size above their normal diapers. I love them!

I have used the 12 hour Pampers baby dry with my DD... She would wake up with them BULGING full, with no leaks!

I usually put her in the next size up for sleeping though. :)

We tried all the other brands we could, including the store brands, and they all leaked or caused my DD to break out in a rash, so we stuck with the Pampers.

I do think that it depends on the baby... My brother used the Pampers, and they leaked for him... he wound up using Huggies. Similarly, my ex-roommate's baby would leak or rash if she used anything but the Target brand diapers.

Experiment a bit until you find one that works for you. :)

Buy bigger diapers or get an insert to add to them at night. We had good luck with Baby Dry and anytime she wet through, it was usually that the diaper wasn't on right or it was too small.

I have the same problem with my 13 month old. I put a size 4 diaper over her size 3 diaper and then put rubber pants over that and it works great! I was having the same problem and I work so changing sheets everyday was a BIG hassle.

Buy some of those pads that stick to the mattress to keep your laundry costs down.

Then switch him to the next size up. I also put overnight sanitary pads in some of ours when there just didn't seem to be anything that worked.

We had great success with Huggies in the red box. We would use the white box for daytime and the red box for nighttime. I'm sure the overnights would be even more absorbant. Good luck!
