Ovarian Cysts and Pregnancy...

I have just found out that I have a cyst on my ovary. I was having cramping and spotting so I went into the OB for an ultrasound and they found the cyst. I was told that it wouldn't affect my current pregnancy (I am 9wks along at the moment), but I am concerned. I have continued to have some pain, mostly in my lower back, and spotting after standing or walking around. As long as I don't stand or walk, I am fine. However, I have two additional children to take care of and work part time in a pharmacy where sitting really isn't an option. I was wondering if anyone else has had any experience with an ovarian cyst. I am a little confused and frightened at the moment because I was told that I wouldn't have any difficulty continuing to work and take care of my children and that the cyst would resolve itself within a matter of time. I plan on discussing the difficulties I am experiencing at my next appointment, which is a week away. In the meantime, has anyone else had this problem and if so how did you handle it?

I have had them to, i had them while i was tring to get preg. with my son. They did hurt and they did go a way on there own, i also took motrin to help with the pain, but you have to watch what you take when you are preg. But you already know that. Good luck and just hang in there

Hi S.-

Well I had the EXACT same experience. I had an ovarian cyst while I was pregnant. The doctor told me, that it would not interfere with the pregnancy, and I really don't think that it did. However, it did interfere with the labor and how my son was born. When I started going into labor, the pressure was so great on my cyst, that I couldn't even stand. I did hurt pretty bad. And because of where the cyst was, I actually had to have a c-section, because there was NO way that I could push with the pain of that cyst & the baby coming out. I think that I had a worst case scenario, because the cyst had wrapped itself around my ovary and they had to remove my entire ovary. However, I feel fine and I am still able to have more children. So I hope this helps you. Good Luck!

Hi S.,

My name is R. and I just went in to emergency surgery and had one of my ovaries removed due to a cyst on it. I had been getting pains in my sides so unbelievable that I couldn't sleep. This was about the 3rd time in approx. 8 months. I went to the hospital and they told me that it was a very large cyst and my ovary was twisted and then they took me into surgery and removed the whole thing. Anyways right before the surgery they told me that I was pregnant, I had to take hormone pills for a week, but other than that they said everything should be fine. It has been about 2 weeks since the surgery and I am only about 6 weeks pregnant but I have since returned to work and taken care of my crazy 2 year old. So everything seems to be fine for me, hopefully everything will work out for you. GOOD LUCK!

S.,

I have had ovarian cysts for several years and did not have any complications with my pregnancy, but I'm not sure mine were around during those months since they seem to come and go with ovulation.

However, I have a friend, (who is due any day now!), that had many problems with her cysts before she was even pregnant. She has fought them the entire pregnancy and has had quite a bit of pain associated with them, and with a blood clot she developed as well. Her doctor was able to give her some medication that was a stronger than tylenol, which has helped her a lot with the pain.

The past month or so, she has worked from home part-time since her doctor was a little concerned with what was going on. BUT she was not put on full bed rest so that's a positive. She has been doing better since then and is pregnant with a perfectly healthy baby!

I wouldn't stress too much. I think, unfortunately, these just might be more uncomfortable to you than dangerous to the baby.

Good luck to you, and congratulations!

S.,
I too had/have ovarian cysts. I dd have some pain and flair ups during my second pregnancy. I did not have bleeding. I know the pain came and went through the pregnancy. I had no troubles there. I was advised to take tylenol to ease the discomfort.
My best advice is to call the Dr. and explain that you're still spotting and are concerned about it. They shouldn't have a problem with you calling. Make sure to tell them how much/little you are spotting.
I hope all goes well for you, I am sure it will.
