Hi Everyone, I would like to know the outcome of any women who have had/have an ovarian cyst. I was diagnosed in May of this year and was told its the size of 1cm. My OB/GYN put me on FemHRT (birth control) which I just started 2 1/2 weeks ago (which has me spotting everyday) I wont be having another ultrasound til Dec. Just really would like some feedback on experiences with this. Also over the last month I've had no pain and now the last 3 days have been difficult. Thanks! C.

So What Happened?

MY UPDATE so far.... had another ultrasound yesterday and the ovarian cyst is the size of a GOLF BALL now and very painful. Since I have not been on birth control for very long, my choices are to either wait and see if the b.c. will help it go away on its own... or to have it removed! Hard decision... Thank you all for giving me your opinions and feedback.

I have to say sometimes it worries me when I see ladies seeking medical questions on this site when they have a health provider who can give them education regarding their diagnoses or health issues that they have .Joanie's respond here will make you worry for no reason instead of helping you , as 95% of OC are benign (not cancerous).Small cyst like yours with no symtoms of pain or discomfort known as functional cysts, or simple cysts, they are part of the normal process of menstruation. They have nothing to do with disease, and These types of cysts occur during ovulation. If the egg is not released, the ovary can fill up with fluid. Usually these types of cysts will go away after a few period cycles.
Most ob/gyn recommend the wait and see approach with regular check ups with such a small cyst however you should follow your doctors rec and if you are having problem with your OCP just tell him and he will change it for you.Good luck and do not worry.

Hi C.,

Yes I have had ovarian cysts since I was 30 now I am 41. The way I found out is that I had three at once and the one that was 3cm burst. This was a painful experience and I had to be hospitalized and put on morphine. My OB/GYN never put me on any medication since she felt they would run their cycle and they do. I know when I have one since the pain is very distinct. Good luck I hope the meds give you some relief. I truly have just learned to live with them. Let me know if the meds work maybe I will hit my new OB/GYN up for some.

I am sorry to hear about your miscarriages. I am a mom of two, an eighteen year old girl and a two year old boy. We would love to have another baby and have been trying, but no luck yet. The added pressure of getting older does not help. And by the way, you are very blessed to have your little one.

I had an ovarian cyst that came up during my pregnancy with my daughter (my one and only, so far). They found it at my 20 wk ultrasound, and just kept an eye on it until I delivered. I had surgery to remove it when my daughter was 4 months old - it was 9 cm. in diameter and about 4 cm in depth...quite large. They went in laporoscopically first, but that was a failed attempt, and so they had to do an incision instead. BUT, they got it all, and I've had no issues. I didn't have any pain when I had it...I did have some pain after the surgery, but just the norm post-op stuff. Hope that helps!

I fortuntely haven't had this problem , but my mom (47) had surgery in march because of this. She had little pain in december... and then all of a sudden she had so much pain.. more and more every day... "exponentially" I guess you could say because it started to grow at a much faster pace after a certain point. The most important thing I could suggest is to get a 2nd, maybe even 3rd opinion. My mom really wished she did... she wouldn't have had to go through so much pain and surgery (like a c-section because it was so big).
I wish you the best!

I just read an article in a Health Journal from a gal that had a tumor on her ovary the size of a honeydew melon. It was a clear cell carcinoma and of course, had to have it removed. Long story short, she had to undergo 8 months of chemo treatments, but combined it with a health drink available through Xango. I'd be happy to send the article to you, as well as info on this fantastic product! Or you can check my website for more information and/or testimonies.....

Take care, I will keep you in my prayers.

I guess it just depends on what type of cyst it is. I have had several and I've even had one rupture. The best treatment for me has been to stay on birth control pills. The added hormones keep mine from recurring.

good luck!

I have had multiple cysts! Some have gotten as big as a grapefruit!!! Though birth control can help it doesn't always. If you had a sudden onset of pain I would go back to the doctor. It could have ruptured or grown big enough to push on nerves. I wouldn't put it off. Even if they tell you its nothing, I would rather know that than spend the next few weeks in pain!

I've had them several times, the last one being June 2008 when I was going through a final IVF cycle. They cyst was 6 cm! The u/s tech even asked if I'd emptied my bladder because she thought that's what she was seeing at first. I had to have it drained...simple procedure and relatively painless. I've had some previously that were also drained. Many years ago I had one done in the hospital through laparoscopy...nowadays they just go through the vaginal opening and give you a local. Several times I was put on BCP's to try and shrink them. Quickest and easiest method to get rid of them was draining. Relatively little to no recovery time involved....I was on vacation last summer, so I was told not to swim for one day. That was it.

I have had several ovarian cysts throughout the years...when I first experienced them was when I was trying to get pregnant for the FIRST time in 1986...it wasn't happening...but I was having pain "down there" on one side and then the other...so the doctor decided to do a laperoscopy which they found cysts and adhesions.... They removed them at that time, also did a D&C...I bled heavy for 14 days. Once I stopped bleeding, I got pregnant immediately with a sucessful pregnancy. (I had one miscarriage between child #1 and #2) 4 or 5 years later I had more pain...they did an ultrasound to "see" what was going on down there and found more cysts. Small, so the doctor decided to see if they would disappear on their own, which they did! Yay! Again, a few years after that, more pain and there was a cyst the size of a tennis ball! Aargh! So, had to have it removed in another day-surgery. Now (as far as I know), I'm cyst-free, have been through menopause for 11 years, I'm 51, and my 4 children are nearly grown-up...Our "babies" - (twins) are 17 next month!

I would not wait til December for an u/s, that's for sure! Due to your discomfort (if it's not bad, tell them it is-so they don't put you off), I would ask for an u/s right now to see what's going on (what size, do you have another one, did it rupture, etc).

The quickest and easiest thing you can do is see a Reproductive Endocrinologist and have it drained, which is a non-invasive procedure. All they do is drain it as much as possible and then it will resolve. If it doesn't compltely go away, they can prescribe low dose birth control pills for a more favorable (hormonal) environment.

If you consume caffeine, stop. It can contribute to these cists. I had never had one, I had my dd and started drinking a bunch of caffeine and three weeks ago I was diagnosed with one. There are simple and complex ones. Simple filled with water. Complex something else, blood, puss, all the way to cancer. The risk for cancer is 5%, so don't stress about what someone else wrote. Find out if yours is simple or complex. Simple, your doc may wait and see. Complex, that size they will take it out most likely. Anything over 5 to 6 cm they usually want out because it can hurt your ovary. I have a complex one that is 7 cm by 4cm and I am having surgery to remove it at the end of the month. I wish you the best of luck. Sorry about your miscarriages, but congrats on your blessing. : )
